This would normally not be a play for me(only 1.6 points for SF not enough value from my model)but a couple of intangible factors make me like it.
6 words: Relativity. Public perception. Size. Depth. Coaching.
Relativity and public perception: Coming into the year I had both Carolina and Seattle ranked as top 10 teams and top 6 defenses. 49ers just went to war with both those teams and despite some losses really impressed me. Their defense kept them in both games- against Cam and Rus no less. So far Hoyer has pooped the bed. Let's pretend he played average in both games... They probably lose but cover vs. Carolina and prolly beat SEA.... IN SEA. I think the #'s I use for my model are kinda skewed by the fact that Rams played a below average team and a team that quit with a trash QB where as the 49ers #'s are a little skewed from playing elite competition.
Let's be real. Hoyer is a below average QB.... But let's also be real he is experienced, and he's not THAT much below average. He has proven plenty of times he can manage games and make a couple throws here and there. He actually was a top 16 QB 3 out of the last 4 years according to PFF. Let's stop pretending like he's trash.
The Rams destroyed a Colts team with maybe the worst QB we will see all year take the field and the Colts team quit fast in that game. That's the honest truth. Washington is a below average team who is still looking for timing and consistency on offense after Reed/Doctson missed all of camp. They were also playing at home both games. Sorry guys... I'm not impressed. The Rams defense on short rest in their 1st road game of the year after playing on short rest is going to be like switching from all madden to rookie at half time.
For whatever reason everyone is all raving about Goff. He's made some nice throws but most of them were on busted coverages and 1 of his best weapons won't be playing in this game. (TE Everett) 25% of his yards have gone to Everett. He was awful last year. He's had some yuck moments the last couple games too. I'm not backing him on the road against this SF defense who even before week 1 I've said was very good. With Everett out, you've got 2 nonathletic TE's who struggle to get separation, Woods who can't get separation, a rookie(Kupp- who admittedly has looked good but still a rookie), and Watkins. Watkins really the only guy on offense that in my opinion is a mismatch.
Side note- Ray Ray Armstrong has been garbage for SF at LB and is finally going to lose snaps or be benched all together to Coyle, who is a HUGE upgrade in coverage ability. People are going to talk about missing Reid, who is great, but his replacement has been the best player in the secondary through 2 games(Tartt). SF defense has only 2 real weaknesses in my opinion- their 2nd and nickel corner. As mentioned I do not think the Rams offense has the talent at 2nd/3rd WR to take advantage of that. Everybody on the Rams offensive line other than Andrew Whitworth has looked like hot garbage to me. The 49ers gonna be able to cover them, and an extremely talented front 4(with 2 really good bench edge rushers-Doom/Tank) are going to be able to get to Goff-book it.
Size and depth: Wade Phillips my dude but this team is not equipped to be a 3-4 yet. Brockers and Westbooks are not bulky/strong enough to be 1 gap 3-4 defensive ends. Quinn weighs 250 lbs soaking wet and hasn't impressed me in a long time. Staley gonna handle that man. Trent Brown is the best RT in the league and he'll be playing against Connor Barwin who somehow got another starting job despite always been trash. He's also 250 lbs. RT Trent Brown is 355 lol. Aaron Donald is a beast but no way can he be full Aaron Donald off short rest and playing a ton of snaps after missing all of training camp. He's also only 280. There is not much bulk on the Rams d-line. Mark Barron is a pretty good cover LB but let's be real he's small for a LB and is a converted safety. The Rams have a 5-8 safety, and a 5'8 starting corner. Rams are most likely to be without CB Webster again and their 3rd/4th CB will be a rookie and a guy who has been awful and is coming off a 2 game suspension(Hill). If Rams lose a corner to injury in game they got some real problems. Their entire defense is small. We saw what Washington did to them y'all. Hyde is almost the same size as both of the Ram's edge rushers, is extremely elusive, and this is run specialist Kyle Shanahan. I would be surprised is Hyde ran for less than 150 yards. That's gonna open up the passing game. Not saying Hoyer gonna be Brady but I think he'll have some really easy looks with LA getting gashed on the ground.
Coaching: Mcvay is really young y'all. Shanahan is older and has a pretty amazing coaching tree he is coming from. I like his consistent aggressiveness despite some poor QB play and his play calling and run game design has always drawn raves around the league. Coaching is hard to numerically quantify and is often very biased but in my opinion the 49ers have a big coaching advantage. Also... worth noting in the media.... Mcvay when asked if he is sleeping at the office said "I dunno about that"... Shanahan is literally sleeping at the office this week. I think the 49ers gonna be the more prepared team- especially with a big experience advantage at QB.
49ers +2
Good luck!

Swolesbee... this was a phuckin awesome write up. While I agree with you on most points, particularly the under rated SF defense, Goff being a turd and the glaring mismatch between SF O-line and LAR rushers... its certainly leaning more on one side (SF's)
Regardless, these are the kinda write ups that make Covers great, even if people disagree with it. Its based on logic and factual opinion... and it SO MUCH BETTER than the hundreds of posts I read each week that say...
"WEEK THREE PICKS"
Eagles -6
KC -3
SF +2
Thanks for following...
RECORD 456-13
Keep em up bro... I got my eye on you.

I think Carlos Hyde is going to have a field day on Rams defense. Hoyer wont have to do much... just manage the game and dont make a mistake. Its not like Niners dont have recievers too.. Garcon and Goodwin are still decent recievers. If Rams decide to commit to stopping Hyde, then Hoyer should get those recievers involved..
Niners need to improve in red zone offense. They struggle to put up points but i think they have a chance to put up more than 9 pts..
17-13 Niners..
Sip on that plus money honey!

There's one flaw in your write-up. You, like many TV talking heads, had Seattle and Carolina vastly overrated. Just like the New York Giants. Great defenses, atrocious offensive lines. I don't see how any watched those three teams play in week 1 and didn't fade them with the under week 2. I played three separate 2-leg parlays and i'm kicking myself for not parlaying all six. How did we get such favorable numbers? Words 2 and 3. Public perception. People buying into the talking head hype.
...but I digress. This is a great write-up and spot on. Personally i'm leaning under in this one but nothings locked in.
TIME TO BRING BACK THE OBAMA CAGES!

Gcwrestling: if only there was an edit button. Just a typo from typing fast.
Stumpdownstu: Car and Sea both have Excellent defenses.
Whether y'all agree or disagree thx for stopping in. Write ups don't win games and I've started hot before and came crashing down. Trying to be consistent this year. Really like this play. In Shanahan and Hyde I trust

I'm aware. I said that. And atrocious offensive lines. And a great defense can compensate for a lack of offense, in theory. It can make up for a subpar QB or a lack of a running game but it can't mask a JuCo offensive line. So while hanging with Seattle and Carolina is impressive by niner standards, and truth be told, I had the niners in both games, truth be told it isn't that impressive. And the reason is those two teams were vastly overrated to begin with.

Stumptown: Yeah you did I was just trying to say that explains some poor number I use for my ratings for SF's offensive players. I don't think they are best as bad as they've looked because of the competition they've faced. SF defense has played well and I have them rated well but if the offense picks up which I think they will against an average defense SF should win.
Zebrakiller: A lot of what you say has some merit. But I don't value the Indy win at all. Indy quit. They got demolished on the ground by Was at home. Their offense has been outscored drastically by LA's and I'm thankful for that- otherwise SF would be a 3 or more point favorite. We're getting them as a dog here because the offense hasn't performed well against incredible defenses- that's a good thing for SF packers. I do not think Goff and the Rams will be able to light up the 49ers on offense.
It is a team game and all phases and 22 starters matter- that's why I like the 49ers. I think the talent at key positions and the coaching very much favors. SF. I have been wrong plenty of times though.

Acetic: I'm never sure lol. All I can go is make an education guess. I try and be selective and only make REALLY educated guesses but this ain't a sure thing. You could easily lose your money if u blindly follow someone else's opinion.

Ideally, I would like to back the 49ers, but Reid and Foster being out bothers me. Harold might be out too.
Hoyer's been late on throws and his accuracy has been really poor thus far too. Also, the 49ers have a very minimal HFA - the stands looked 40% full for the Panthers game.
That said, the Rams defense is a BIG step down in class than the Panthers and Seahawks, so the 49ers should score at least a couple TD's including running the ball pretty well. Their new TE Kittle is sneaky good too and Shanahan knows how to use him.
Rams corners were out on Sunday, not sure of their statuses. Redskins did outplay the Rams overall, but to their credit, the Rams did come back to tie so I think they're moving in the right direction overall, but Goff still stares down his receivers too much. Gurley looking pretty strong thus far and their receivers and schemes have improved some, so their offense is no longer dead or predictable.
Rams special teams could be key with best punter in the game. Both McVay and Shanahan are just beginning to learn how to be head coaches, so that area is a wash.

Motower: Gotta be honest u make some good points but I think Carlos Hyde could run for 200+ yards tonight. The Rams run defense is possibly the worst I've seen in quite sometime. Good luck!

Wouldn't be that surprised if he did. I do not like the Rams LB's and secondary at all, especially if their corners are out again. I just don't have a strong enough opinion on this game with all the key injuries and unreliable QB play on both sides, thus will pass. GL

Hard to bet on a team that haven't score a touchdown this season yet. Both carolina and seattle didn't have a run game plus seattle oline bang up. If they did 49ers would've got destroy even more. Now they face a team with a running back. Everybody was talking good bout rams and jump off the wagon after lost to Washington. It was still a close high score game. Think rams bounce back before they face the cowboys. Game might be real close like texans and bengals last TNF. So im taking rams ML....maybe in game 49ers if it goes up+4 or +7.
