Ouch. That has to hurt.
In the wake of the very public shaming that has befallen San Francisco 49ers Quarterback Colin Kaepernick for his decision to disrespect our National Anthem, the deepest cut may have come from the disgraced QB’s own mother.
Heidi Russo is Colin Kaepernick’s biological mother, who gave him up for adoption when he was a baby. Over the weekend she took to Twitter to express her disappointment with his decision to act out in such a public and disrespectful manner.
“There’s ways to make change w/o disrespecting & bringing shame to the very country & family who afforded you so many blessings,” the upset mother declared.
@Kaepernick7

She then added that “The path less traveled doesn’t need to be one of destruction.”
@Kaepernick7 The path less traveled doesn't need to be one of destruction. #beenthere #besmarter #berespectful

Needless to say, Russo received a lot of negative feedback about her decision to weigh in on the ongoing hubbub surrounding Kaepernick’s decision to express his disgust with our nation.
“I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses Black people and people of color,” Kaepernick explained to NFL.com. “To me, this is bigger than football and it would be selfish on my part to look the other way. There are bodies in the street and people getting paid leave and getting away with murder.”
Some fellow Twitter users argued that what he was doing was actually honorable!
@DrTMG Never said standing up for injustice is wrong. Clearly there's a problem. Don't twist what I said to make a racial point.

While still others thought that Russo had no right to chime in on Kaepernick’s behavior because she had given him up for adoption so long ago.
@Erricka88
PLACING my son for adoption is NOT giving up. It's giving him the life
he deserved & love beyond comprehension. Congrats 2ur son.

I’m not sure it was the best idea for Russo to add her two cents to the discussion, especially by arguing that Kaepernick had brought shame to his family, but I don’t think what she said was inaccurate. Kaepernick disgraced his nation, and he brought unfair attention to his family by acting in such a repulsive manner. Yes, there is injustice in our nation today. Yes, there are things that need to change… but his choice to make such a revolting statement on national television by disrespecting a nation that has only given him good things, even in the face of difficulty is reviling.
