Colts have 1st down at Lions 10, with 1 min and clock running, down 6.
Inexplicably, Pagano takes a timeout. They complete a short pass inbounds, and
he ridiculously takes another timeout with 46 seconds. He is essentially saving
time for Detroit to get go ahead FG, AND saving all 3 TOs for Detroit.
Indy throws td pass on 3rd down, and takes a 1 point lead. However, Detroit
has 37 seconds and all 3 TOs, down 2.
Det got flagged for leaping on the extra point, so Indy gets to kickoff
from the 50. What does Pagano elect to do? Blast the kickoff into the stands,
giving Detroit decent starting field position at the 25, and running zero time
off on the return.
Why doesn’t he take advantage of the 15 yard penalty by kicking it very
high inside the 5, and pinning them deep? You can drill ball through end
zone from the 35—he gets nothing out of the 15 yard penalty.
Job of the coach is to maximize your team’s chances of victory, and
minimize opponent’s chances. Pagano did neither, and his decisions lost the game
for the Colts.
What is wrong with these coaches? They have no concept of strategy.
