As the season comes to a close, motivation/pressure will play a big part in who shows up to play, and how well they play, in the final game of the season. Some teams are playing for playoff spots, others playing for pride and some just trying to cross the finish line. Looking at these games I see some teams with a big psychological and/or motivational advantage. The Giants are playing an Eagles team that just screwed up a great opportunity to make the playoffs (losing two 2 divisional foes). Now they have to get up for a meaningless game against another division foe looking for revenge after they got humiliated on national tv by the Eagles. The Giants are not only playing some of their best, most inspired ball but they also wanna finish strong for a coach that they respect and love (as this may be his last game).
The Chiefs are not really playing for a playoff spot (though they are mathematically alive) but all the pressure is now off this team. They’ve been in must-win mode for 3 weeks now, against very good competition, and now face a decimated Chargers team with plenty of motivation. But the Chargers have not been playing well (despite their miracle win against the Niners). Like the Chiefs, they too have been in must-win mode (against good teams) but they’ve played much worse under pressure. Now they go into KC (a tough place to play) with all the pressure in the world. The Chiefs will be loose and relaxed for this game and will look to take out their frustrations for missing the playoffs on a gimpy Chargers team that’s ready to give up the ghost.
