I'll never forget 1999
It's a stain on my soul that will last forever. That is the year that parity reared its ugly head only to stick around and change the way we handicap games for the next 9 years before we saw the resurgence of power teams, the haves and have nots.
A little insight on me now that I have been handicapping games since the year 2000.
I started betting football in 1992 an 18 year old kid living in San Diego, we have close access to legal betting a quick 15 minute drive to Tijuana Mexico at caliente sports book now caliente casino race and sports book.
The reason I say I bet football games from 1992 to 1999 and handicap games from the year 2000 to present 2022 is 1999 opened a second hole in my a$$
Imagine you have teams that are almost automatic covers week in week out
We had that in the mid 90s
49ers with Montana then Steve Young
Broncos with John Elway
Dallas Cowboys with Troy Aikman
Green Bay Packers with Brett Farve
And you had some up and coming and solid teams as well
Patriots with Drew Bledsoe
Jacksonville Jaguars with Mark Brunel
Minnesota Vikings with Randal Cunningham and Randy Moss
Buffalo Bills with Doug Flutie
If you were betting football in the mid 90s
You were laying the wood and getting paid with 1998 being the whopper of that era
I recall a period of 9 out of 12 weeks
If you four game parlayed
Denver
Green Bay
Minnesota
Jacksonville
You hit
Then 1999 reared its ugly disgusting head
I had won over 60k in 1998
Opened my first pizza place then and still had 15k in winnings left to pounce in 1999
The unthinkable happened
Elway retired
The broncos looked great opening week with Brian griese at qb vs the greatest show on turf
This caused an over reaction of how good Denver was
The jags went 14-2 losing both regular season games to an upstart but very boring Tennessee team
But they only cover 6 of 10
Steve Young got murdered on the field because a murderer named Lawrence Philips missed a block
Farve was trying to do it all by himself as his Superbowl core of players got old
Vikings struggled so bad Randal Cunningham was replaced by Jeff George
Everything had turned upside down over night
I had to relearn how to bet
After getting my @$$ smoked that year
I sat down and learned everything I could
Years later I do this for fun now and I do okay
No life changing money but I have fun and at the end of the year betting thousands a weeks I have enough for a family trip out of the country and all bills paid for the month we are gone
After the start of this season
I'm barely hanging with these games
College has been great especially live betting totals
The NFL has me thinking after the first 3 weeks I'm close to saying the 1999 remake is here but not ready to do so
Anyone have opinions on this?
