Yes. He did not call it with 30 seconds on playclock - he called it with 3 seconds. So play is running off at basically that point. He just wanted to make sure his safeties didn't get fooled on a deep ball or something b/c (maybe) OAK tries it as they can just punt after that if it bricks out.
That is NOT an unreasonable time out. He isn't calling TO to WIN THE GAME. He is just reminding his young 20 year olds with ton of adrenaline to be careful. (Look OAK threw on 1st down of the drive - when EVERYONE assumed it would be 3 runs to get a 1st down and TIE locked up).

The timeout had nothin to do with LA losing.
It was actually about 8 seconds.. either way you are right it wouldn't change the outcome..
It doesnt matter if he called a TO... The Raiders would have just called a TO instead... The announcers basically told you how the game would end without actually telling you... All game long, they kept mentioning tie and how that guy hasnt missed a kick... Everyone thought that is how the game would end, him missing the GW FG and the game ending in a tie yet the opposite happened..
It changes the momentum of the game. All the players was thinking simple run and end the game. Just like the Pittsburgh game against the Browns. After the timeout, the Steelers come out and score a walk in TD. I saw this happens too many times. When there is a timeout at the end of the game, some thing strange happens. These coach should just let thing run it course. It is 99% that the Raiders will have a simple run play and the game will end with a tie.
Yes. But the timeout wasn't the backbreaker. Going for it on 4th down deep in his own zone and the other idiotic things he did this year.
I'm a believer in analytics. They can be very useful but in football, especially the NFL, they haven't been tested out yet.
He made a ton of dumb decisions this season. some actually went in the Chargers favor.
But why not just go for 2 when they scored with no time left in regulation? Why decide it on a coin toss? Analytics would say go for it.
He's not a great coach and is in way over his head. he needs to be at mid major college program or a coordinator. He ain't got it.

There's no way Raiders were gonna kick a fg unless Staley made him run another play. You just took your own team out of the playoffs after an inspiring heroic comeback to get here. That call actually trumped the 2nd worst call of the year groing for 4th and 1 from your 18 yard line. Hard to eclipse but he pulled it off.
cc is exactly correct, it was an insult and he made them pay. Raiders were in no hurry, one more fun into the line that game was over. That shock was up there with the Nick Chubb step out last year. Coaches are supposed to be smarter then the players.
I had Chargers -3 & prop Chargers ML O52. Prop was $100, it was kinda worth the buck they lost.

As I’ve said in many other threads it made perfect sense for the Chargers to call that timeout. The Raiders were not just going to let the clock run out...would they let it run DOWN, yes! But not out. The Raiders were going to kick a FG as time expired no matter what because they had an advantageous playoff matchup to gain, and nothing to lose (putting the risk of a blocked FG returned for TD at less than 1%).
The only way the Raiders were not going to kick that FG is if there was time on the clock and the risk that a missed or blocked FG would give the Chargers the ball, good field position and 30 seconds to work with. The Chargers needed a stop to force 4th down. That’s why they lost, not the god damn timeout, fukk it’s not rocket science.
Chargers don’t take the timeout there’s a 90ish% chance they lose on a Raiders FG and maybe only 10% chance they get lucky with a miss and tie.
With the timeout, if their atrocious defence could have gotten a stop, there’s probably an 80-90% chance the Raiders play safe and punt it guaranteeing the tie, and only 10-20% chance Raiders try the win and risk losing themselves.
Chargers:
NO TIMEOUT, 90% lose/10% tie.
YES TIMEOUT, 10% lose/90% tie.
What would you do?
Lets say Staley was playing it perfectly.... Just assume for a second...
With 38 secs left he calls his first timeout because he realizes how important the third and 4 was at the 38 yard line, and he realized the Raiders were 100% going to run and he had a typical pass defense out there for a typical 3rd and 4.
The key is stopping them. If he stopped them - it would have been very interesting to see if he immediately called the SECOND timeout at about 30 seconds. That was the one that would have mattered because then the Raiders wouldve been forced to either punt or try a long FG - which if missed wouldve given LA the ball on the 45.
We will never know if he had all of this in mind. But the first timeout would get a defense out there that would SET UP THE SECOND TIMEOUT AT 30 SECONDS.

That Lakers prediction was not mine, it was CavsChumps2017 and he stated multiple times he would leave covers if it didn't happen...he's a proven liar and loser...but also a proven fade and mush so it all evens out in the end for the Covers community
