I might be wrong but I think coaches grossly underestimated how deflating it is to go for a fourth down and not get it. They had 3 points, down by 7 and instead down 10.
how many times have we seen teams just run a team out of the building after a failed 4th down.
analytics doesn’t show it on a sheet but Jesus tap dancing Christ it’s been plain as day for the last five years since going for it has become en vogue.
im whining. I’m going to grab my pacifier and one of your mothers and go to bed.

I agree. It’s frustrating in baseball too. On the Cowboys 4th and 2 conversion attempt there was a display at the bottom of the screen that said “4th an 4 or less go for it”.
I could be wrong but I’m pretty sure that doesn’t account for Cooper Rush vs. say Patrick Mahomes at QB or other factors like backup offensive linemen on the field. Seems like a generic strategy that doesn’t take into account who’s playing. Worked for my Houston -7 bet but in general it’s pretty annoying to see constantly.

Paralysis via over analysis. Time changes everything but it shouldn't. You're right anal-lytics do not compute the emotional and momentum loss due to such decisions based on a chart statisticians who never played anything invented. Personally I never understood the field goal aspect of football. But it's part of the game. It's far more challenging to win a game trying to punch it into the endzone. Winning games at the 50 yard line doesn't do much for me. Kickers are not automatic but evolution has led to these legs being used to win games needing less than 50 yards on drives.
However, it is a way to put points on the board. It's funny how the legs can kick it more consistently further away but the statistics and risk reward situations have changed strategies in the last few years. A field goal still puts points on the board yet a new generation of coaches think more about offense winning games more often than defense.Last I checked you still need an above average to elite defense. Unless we want to play no tackle flag arena football yay lol.

Changed the entire complexion of the game! Momentum, players hanging their heads, all of it. Aikman was livid. I think part of the problem was that penalty on a 64 yarder that went in. It was such an uplifting moment, especially for the kicker who had missed an easy one. That would have tightened the noose on the Texans who have been blowing leads in the second half. But once you accept the penalty, and get all the way inside the 10 yard line and don’t score a TD, a FG in that spot might be kind of deflating as well.
