I’m not one of the hardcore theorists who believe that everything in sports is fixed, but I also don’t think it’s 100% legitimate either. This morning Mike Greenberg made a very subtle comment that caught me off guard. Before they dissected the game from last night, he said something along the lines of “everyone was betting on the falcons, so it’s no surprise the eagles won”. On covers we talk about that all the time. Scott Van Pelt says the same thing on his nightly show when he gives his football picks for the weekend. I just thought it would be nice to start a thread to discuss all this without one side bashing the other. I’ve lost many games where I felt like I was on the wrong side of the fix, but I’ve also been on the side that benefited from a few bad calls or some mistakes. It’s just part of the game. If you can’t handle that, you shouldn’t bet. The falcons had a very good chance of winning last night. 1st and 10 at the eagles 10 yard line with 23 seconds left, I actually thought they were going to score. I was on the eagles, so I’m watching the game thinking “Yep. This is where they fkkk me. This is how I’m going to lose today”, but luckily they didn’t. If the refs (on behalf of the NFL/Vegas) wanted the eagles to win, they shouldn’t have thrown the flag on that 4th down play which gave the falcons one more shot. Calls get missed all the time. They could’ve easily let that go and that would’ve been game over.
