FI started, and
ended the season @ 3-0. Their
first 3 losses were to UL Lafayette, Duke, and Arkansas State with a combined
score of those 3 losses of 74-111 (losing by more than 5 pts in those games
only to Arkansas State). TY Hilton had a
monster start to the season with 14 catches for 333 yards. Then he incurred a hamstring pull vs Central
Fla and finished that game with 3 catches for only 30 yards. Hilton is an NFL bound receiver with
incredible skills. Since the hamstring
injury he had just 47 for 587 yards receiving (post Central Florida) Correct me if I am wrong, but FIU has only
played one game this season on National TV (Vs. Louisville), in which Hilton
put up 7 catches for 201 yards and 2 TDs.
He is expected to go in the 2nd or 3rd round in the
NFL draft, but this performance tonight could help or hurt that draft placing immensely. Hilton is also a talented KO and Punt
returner, he averaged 32.3 yards (ranked 3rd in the nation) as a KO
returner, and 23.3 yards (ranked 8th in the country) as a punt
returner.
Marshall was 2-5
vs Bowl teams this season, and all 5 were blow out losses. Marshall nearly won the division with a team
that has done nearly nothing really well this season—a couple players would be
the exception. Marshall is ranked 94th
in the Nation in pts per game (22.0), and that had slightly improved over the last
3 gms to 24.7 (vs Tulsa 85th in D, Memphis 117th in D,
and East Carolina 50th in D, these teams are an average defensive
ranking of 84th of 120 teams)
NOTE: vs the 85th ranked Tulsa and the 117th
Memphis—in defensive yds allowed—they averaged scoring 20 pts per game. FIU is ranked 29th in defensive
yards allowed. Though Marshall’s
Offensive yards gained is ranked a dismal 100th (355 per game),
their defense is not much better; it is ranked 81st (allowing 418.1
per game, and that has increased over the last 3 to 458.7). Marshall’s crown jewel is their stellar
Defensive end Vinny Curry. Curry is a
monster that you will be watching on Sunday’s pretty soon. Curry is 2nd in the country with
21 tackles for a loss. Curry has a
couple other stellar players on his squad with tackles for losses (Delvin
Johnson 10.5, and Tyson Gale with 10).
Marshall is ranked 60th allowing 155 ypg on the ground and
that has worsened over the last 3 to 187.
Then you have Marshall’s 97th ranked passing D, which allows 262
pg, and the last 3 they allowed 275 pg.
In short, if Marshall does not stop their opponents for a loss, they
give up decent chunks of yardage.
Marshall vs quality defenses that allow less yards per play than FIU: Vs W.VA (that allowed 4.7 yards per play this
season) WVA won by 21…. VS Southern Miss: Marshall won 20-26, but S.Miss turned
the ball over 6 times in that game.
Turnovers:
FIU averages a 0.4+ TO margin, while Marshall is @ +0.2. Winning the turnover battle is the ONLY way
that Marshall stays in this game.
Marshall’s defense gets into the opposing teams backfield pretty fast,
so it is possible, but the odds are against them winning the TO battle.
Marshall O vs FIU D: FIU is ranked 23rd
in the nation allowing 121 per game, and that is down to 102 per game over the
last 3. Marshall is ranked 90th
in rushing O ypg with 123 ypg, but that is up to 137 over the last 3. Marshall runs the ball an average of 36% of
their total yards per game, and they call only about 48% pass plays. They rely on catching the defense sleeping
for shots down the field; not very well, but that is what they attempt.
FUI O Vs. Marshall D:
FIU will not change their game plan vs a weak Marshall squad with the
exception of more options and passes into the flat. They call 45% pass plays, but they account
for 59% of their total yardage in the air.
FIU’s Kedrick Rhodes is a decent back, but not always consistent; though
I expect 150+ yds from him tonight. The
real story is going to be Hilton. I see
Hilton having a red letter day today.
