Oakland over 5.5 (+115)
Now this seems to be a team much improved. Nowhere to go but up and, through the draft and free agency, they're already on their way to 8-8. Or maybe 7-9..
Let's start with Matt Flynn. It's his position to lose according to new GM Reggie McKenzie, who is very familiar with Flynn from their days in Green Bay. It's nice that he doesn't have to worry about Pryor or rookie Tyler Wilson breathing down his neck. At least for now... Flynn is going to have to make some plays because his receivers are crap. Injury prone Jacoby Ford is back, that's something I guess.
On the other side of the ball, last year, their defensive line was about the worst in the NFL. It's basically impossible NOT to improve. Having Richard Seymour out of the picture is already a huge improvement. The retirement of LB Rolando McClain is also a big upgrade. These two losers were cancerous to the locker room and, with them out of the picture, there's now open opportunities for true leaders to step up and instill some confidence in the team.
Speaking of leaders, enter Charles Woodson. The secondary is the most improved bunch on this team. According to ESPN, the Raiders have 4 of the top 15 and 5 of the top 19 DBs in the AFC West. Tyvon Branch (#7), Charles Woodson (#10), DJ Hayden (#11), Mike Jenkins (#15), Tracey Porter (#19). Interestingly enough, their best CB towards the end of last season was Phillip Adams and he's outside this short list, being ranked #24. Things are indeed looking up in the defensive backfield.
Quick shout out to 3rd round pick LB Sio Moore, who is on the path to starting week 1. He led UCONN with 15.5 tackles for loss in 2012, totaling 43 for his college career. FORTY THREE! Oakland may have skipped the draft in terms of DE but they got their future big time pass rusher. Lots of pressure for the young rookie but he had a great combine and the Raiders love him. Alongside Nick Roach, who came from Chicago and who will be the captain/play-caller, these 2 guys could very well lead the team in tackles. Don't underestimate how much Rolando McClain and Richard Seymour were bringing down the defense, especially up front. These guys were hated among their peers and McClain was an idiot. MASSIVE upgrades here.
The schedule. It is tough.
Let's say they go 2-4 in the division, getting swept by Denver. This leaves 10 games to find 4 wins.
WK 1 @ IND loss
WK 2 vs JAX win
WK 4 vs WAS ???
WK 8 vs PIT ??? (The Steelers lost this game last year and also in 2009)
WK 9 vs PHI ???
WK 10 @ NYG loss
WK 11 @ HOU loss
WK 12 vs TEN win
WK 13 @ DAL ???
WK 14 @ NYJ win
As recently as the 2010 season, the Oakland Raiders swept their division going 6-0. That certainly isn't happening again this year BUT, if they take care of the true scrubs on their schedule this season, I have faith that the young Black and Silver can pull an upset or two on some big dogs and who knows, by the end of the season, they might even be the favorite in 2 out of 3 of those last few divisional matchups of the year.
After finishing 4-12 in 2012 and being thoroughly embarrassed, what better way to earn some recognition than by picking up some guidance and leadership and winning a few games? Last year, even when the offense was playing well, the defense would blow the lead or it would simply be too far out of reach for them to catch up. I expect a noticeable change. In the words of the late Al Davis, "Just win baby!"
