The ref actually tripped over his words when he was explaining it, he didn't sound sure of what he was saying at all. I think he first said, 'Each team will get the opportunity to score.' and then changed it to, 'Each team will get the opportunity to possess the ball.' and then whatever he said after it sounded so much like the usual explanation I kinda stopped listening.
They should have made clear at the start that postseason overtime rules are different in that the first team with possession scoring a TD does not end the game as in the regular season. His first explanation of 'each team will get the opportunity to score' was actually more accurate so when he corrected himself it sounded like he had gotten confused, even though 'both teams will get the opportunity to possess the ball' is basically the same.
It doesn't really matter. They lost the game simply by allowing it to go to OT. They were never beating that QB and coaching staff with all their SB experience in an OT game.
They had every chance to win in regulation and couldn't do it. Don't muff punts and set the Chiefs up in the red zone after you just got a stop. That was really the game right there. They didn't sniff the end zone otherwise.
After taking a halftime lead, getting a stop on the Chiefs first drive of the 2nd half was key. They not only got that, but got a turnover. That should have doomed the Chiefs. Score a TD off that, it's looking very bad for KC. They went 3 and out (which they did 3 times consecutively also).
Then they got the PAT blocked which made extending the game basically automatic now that you only need 3 to tie. As it was they nearly gave up a TD anyway in fact I thought the Chiefs would/could have taken one more shot. But just missing that kick played a big part psychologically with the players. KC knew they didn't have to panic, while SF is left thinking 'What do we have to do to actually shut the door on these guys and why can't we do it?'
They also fumbled on the first possession when they were driving with ease. Imagine they get a TD first drive that would have been huge considering the Chiefs struggled on offense the first half.
You can't make mistakes like that and beat the Chiefs, and you can't not capitalize on the mistakes they make because they don't make many. You have to play your A game, not your B+ game. And SF didn't do that. They actually didn't do it the whole playoffs which is why they didn't cover in any games.
I was actually thinking when the heck has any team won the super bowl without covering a spread in the playoffs and it almost put me off SF.
I figured it was a coin flip game and I didn't want to fade Mahomes in that type of situation.
Unfortunately it played out how I feared, they couldn't shut the door on the golden boy and they choked away a game they should have won simply because the other team has the winning DNA same as the Pats did with Brady. Shanahan is only good enough to be able to find out he isnt good enough.
