An interesting week, which I think there was a good deal to take from, though maybe I'll try to keep a little shorter than previous weeks that way it'll be easier to digest.
I'm going to go backwards, starting with the Eagles.
So, now we know that the only one on the planet who doesn't know that the piece that makes the Eagles go is Brian Westbrook is Andy Reid. I suppose we knew that before, at least, we Eagles fans did, it's part of our ongoing frustration with this coaching staff. Now you bettors know the pain as well.
Of course when the O-line takes the night off Jim Brown could have been back there and it wouldn't matter much. Hell, Buckhalter still got over 100 on the ground, but it doesn't matter when you give up 11 sacks and have 14 penalties.
The Eagles are an 8-8 team that past performance makes people think they can be 10-6 and win the division. Which leads me to this.
Certain things get said every year, and the reason is because there are certain things you can't say enough. This week you get this.
This year is not last year, don't bet like it is.
I mean, I suppose you could bet the Eagles like they were before Donovan went out and you'd be close, but if you bet them like they're the team that finished the season so strong last year or broke out against a bad Lions' defense last week, you're asking for trouble.
Hell, until everybody gets back (Westbrook, B-Dawk, Lito, etc.) I'd just stay off 'em all together.
Speaking of the Lions, those overs still work, but man did they do it the hard way today. Griese with two redzone turnovers if I remember right, the Lions with one and a missed FG. Ugh.
Speaking of the Eagles and the Bears, the Bears should have suggested what was going to happen to the birds tonight, too many people hurt can only keep you in the game so long.
It looks like you can figure the Bears for middle of the pack based on injury and that post-Super Bowl hangover.
It also looks like the Cowboys are the best team, by far, in the NFC. But as Denny Green would tell you, if you want to crown them after four weeks, go ahead, but it's a long season.
And the Rams, like the Bears, like the Eagles prove that you can have lots of talent (Bulger, Jackson, etc.) but if you can't keep everybody on the field, you can't win.
Unless you're Buffalo. I was one who lost on Buffalo, and I might again because their defense is just that thin, but I'm not just a little wary of Trent Edwards. Not because I think he's the second coming of Brady or Big Ben, someone who can come in and win immediately, but because nobody has any tape on him yet. Give it another week and it should start kicking in for them.
Speaking of the Jets, does this team look destined for mediocrity or what? If you want to even pretend your a playoff team you win games like that today. But when your record last year was inflated by playing bad teams, maybe now you prove who you really are. A team with a suspect defense and an offense that lacks consistency.
Miami used to have a pretty significant home field advantage in September, but it seems they've even lost that.
Today I learned (again) that Trent Green's career is just waiting for someone to pull the plug on it. I'll bet against them or lay off their games until the QB change.
On the other side of that game, I admire Oakland flying across the country for an early game, with a backup QB and shoving it right down Mami's throat.
If I'm not mistaken they get Domnick Rhodes back in another week or two, when they do, if they can just get even competent QB play, they should be a fairly average to decent team--which is a huge jump from where they were last year. Their defense isn't scaring me right now, which is fine, because I like to play overs, but Lamont Jordan is on a mission and if they use him and Rhodes as a two-headed beast they really won't need to throw all that much.
Now, you say, how could I have gone this long without talking Cleveland Browns football? Good question. Really I think it's mostly a byproduct of being so thrown off by their first game, it's had this weird ripple effect on me and I feel skewed on my own team. It's very odd, it's been a long time since I haven't had a feel for them like this. Great game today. Make no mistake, they won that game. Baltimore didn't give it to them, they took it.
Which I think says more about Baltimore than Cleveland. Cleveland seems to be willing to play to their opponent (save Pitt). With Cincy, they leave the defense on the sidelines and throw. With Oakland they run and run and score ugly. With Baltimore, they stop the run and sustain drives. It's very odd, but good for them.
Something to note on Cleveland, their offensive line is about to get better. Ryan Tucker, a starter who everybody likes in the locker room is coming off a suspension next week.
For Baltimore, I don't even know what to say except that they have a QB problem and this performance proves Pittsburgh is the class of that division.
And yes, I know Pittsburgh lost today, I bet Arizona. But that was one of those weird situations, Ward out, the Cardinals' staff being Pitt's staff the year before. That situation won't happen again this season, I think Pitt is for real and can only hope this loss creates some value with them.
Arizona, however, I now hope plays Kurt Warner a lot because it's a known fact that the more Kurt Warner plays the more turnovers he has, the ratio is proportionate.
Again, though, they're becoming Pittsburgh west, lots of running, then some targeted shots through the air.
They're the anti-Cincy.
