 They had to run a play because it was 4th down with time still on the clock. If they punt it could theoretically get blocked for a TD, then 2pt, onside recover, and fg for the tie. By taking the safety they run a little extra time off the clock, get to kick it back to the Texans with no possibility of block and likely better kick coverage, and it's still a 2 possession game anyways so not enough time left at that point for the Texans.

I think Reid makes that same call 100% of the time in that situation.
