The Eagles roll into tonight's game with the support of the betting nation, who fattened their bankrolls yesterday across the board betting their favorites and laying & plus spreads to their hapless and incapable opposition. Tonight the public obviously sees this scenario playing out again as the Eagles line continues to grow to -8.
Unlike yesterday though, tonight laying the points will turn out to be dead wrong. Its going to be a long for the Eagles backers.
The public angle.....That the Redskins suck and they can't score.....The Eagles come in 3-2, and even though they lost to Oakland, they still have some public credibility based on thier playoff history and popular QB Donovan McNabb. The public rationalizes that the Eagles will be able to score enough to handle the 8 points against a Redskin team that appears to be in a state of disarray (after the Skins made some midweek coaching changes and 1 week after an inept QB in Campbell was yanked from the game.)
The public will be wrong. The truth is that the Eagles can barely help themselves right now.... They lost to the Raiders are are worse off this week injury wise then they were last week at Oakland. In reality, even as putrid as Washington appears, they come in just one win behind the Eagles.
The Eagles, who also had to travel across the country last week after losing to the one of the worst teams in recent NFL history are actually not getting burred in the media like they should (an usually would).... Thank you Philadelphia Phillies...Call me crazy...but the Eagles are playing second fiddle in the city and some gross facts are being ignored in lieu of the Fightin Phils.
Here is the scary part of backing the Eagles tonight (and what the Phillies coverage has shaded)...considering the public angle I stated above..., using the public perspective of the Redskins being a joke and the Eagles having the ability to put up points...The Eagles haven't scored a TD in the last 5 consecutive quarters.
In the loss at Oakland, The Eagles were 2 of 16 on third-downs, 12 of which were six yards plus. †his does not bode well versus the Skins who's pass rush has 11 sacks in their last 3 games.
The Eagles 3 wins have also come against teams that are a combined 3-17 SU. I know the Redskins have had a similar schedule...but the Skins haven't lost a regular season game by more than 8 points since (and you play who you play) December 7th 2008. If you include don't inc;ude the cheap safety the Chiefs got on them last week with 30 seconds left in the game... then the number goes from 8 point to no losses greater than 7 points.
The Eagles, who's offense is being so heavily depended upon to cover the 8 points...is very much limping into the game, they will be without Kevin Curtis who is likely done for the year, leaving the Birds with only 4 wide receivers on the roster. Altough the Eagles will have a moral boost getting Herriman back on the online tonight, the guy hasn't played a live snap since last years NFC Championship game.
The Sherman Lewis Factor...Since he Play calling for the Skins has been stripped away from haed coach Zorn effective this week, this will be a good and energizing for the players. By putting in Lewis midweek, we likely will see a Redskins team more like we are used to seeing (not what we have seen the past few weeks). Lewis will definitely go back to what works for the Skins offensively, that means much more of tight end in Chris Cooley and certainly a whole lot more Clinton Portis. Cooley has 27 catches for 311 yards in six games, Portis has rushed for 447 yards on 106 carries (a fraction of the amount of carries he should have at this point).
Washington's O-line hasn't had it easy...especially after losing left tackle Chris Samuel last week for probably the season. The Skins did however go out and sign Veteran Levi Jones, who is a veteran that should be able to bring experience to the line.
If the Skins can get the run game back out of Portis, it will open up Cooley and allow Campbell a time to get his rhythm going. The Redskins are only 1 good offensive drive away, under the new offensive coaching, from getting their swagger back.
No way can I lay 8 with a MNF road favorite that hasn't scored a TD in 5 Quarters. The home dog strikes SU.
Take Washington +8...my NFL Game Of The Year!
