he will miss this week's game against the panthers. how does this affect the defense? will it still be effective with the linebackers coach calling the plays?

i dont see how it's a stupid thread. the defensive coordinator wont be calling the plays this week. and he's the reason that this defense turned around this season. im trying to see other's opinions on how this will affect the defense.

Too bad for the Texans to suffer another health issue on top of Matt Schaub, Leinart and Andrei Johnson. It will affect the defense gameplans and callings to some degrees. It's a shame that i have to share, Texans just grabbed their first ever playoff bid with so many adversities.

I think this thread is good too. I thought HOU would win in a romp over Carolina this week.

Now, I don't know. Anytime there is a significant change to play calling, problems can happen.

i think the play would be over. houston still has arian foster to run through this porous run defense. and i think with a new playcaller, i think newton will be able to put up points. just a thought. i see 20-24 points from houston at least. question is can carolina still put up around the same??

its not , and thats because this is old news, any body ho has a TV or uses the web and get to any sport page or program knows wade is on a medical leave.......and of course unless u live underneath a rock u should know who the michellin man is and what might happen if he isnt in the side llines

now this is not a wise response. i did not know Philips was on medical leave before i saw this thread and i'm 100% sure i DON"T live underneath a rock.  

I think that's a huge loss when you consider how improved Houston's defense is this year.
However, I don't see the defensive philosophy he brought to the team evaporating with his absence at this point. His defensive scheme works for this team and they will play for him even though he's won't be there.
As far as how this will play into this week's game, there are other factors to consider.
1) Houston wrapped up their division with last week's win at Cin. They don't have that motivation working for them.
2) Car can be a scrappy team and it's anyone's guess if Cam the man will have a good outing or not.
This game is a Pass as far as I'm concerned...

this comment can't be further from the truth...to be the #1 seed is not motivation? texans win out, and they have a very good shot cause Pit, Ravens, Pats could all lose on the road this weekend.

this is one of the smartest commens ive seen regarding the houston game , ...Car Deffense is more than garbage, Houston wont need to put the game on Yates shoulders, Foster will be able to stomp and trample all over this swiss cheese CAR Deffense, o the other side Cam wont be able to do much, Wade or no Wade this Deffense will play at ist 150%  why ---because they have key injuries on offense so since schaubb got hurt the Deffense has  stepped up  also  for houston will be a huge bonus to have that extra week of rest and prepare if they clinch #1 seed, i mean u people think Houston will rather rest and take this game lightly and lose than to play hard and rest later when they get a real opponnent like pittsburgh-- beisdes--- this game is at the Reliant, the home crowd will love nothing more than to celebrate their 1st ever play off berth and will expect their team to win

Herring coached the Texans’ linebackers in 2002-03 under Dom Capers. He spent three years (2008-2010) as the linebackers coach at Dallas when Phillips was the head coach. Herring followed Phillips to the Texans.

Herring was a long-time defensive coordinator in the college ranks, so he has experience calling defenses.

Herring is very popular with his players. He’s hard-nosed but fair. He’s an outstanding communicator. He’s been an ideal complement to the low-key Phillips, who’s acknowledged as one of the best defensive coordinators in league history.

Agreed.... The Houston Defense won't miss a beat without Phillips... Herring is more than capable..... Texans defense has shut down several very good offenses including Steelers, Texans, ect.

plus, I love betting against the rookie qb on the road!

The motivation of WRAPPING UP THEIR DIVISION is gone! Comprende? Since, they won the division, THAT SPECIFIC MOTIVATION can by definition no longer be present. UNDERSTAND NOW????!!!!!!     And you call me nuts?  sheesh
The motivation of a bye is not the same motivation as playing for home field advantage or a bye....get it?
It is A motivation, but it's not the same motivation. It's not as strong.
Take a look at the Niners last weekend. They "needed" to beat Ari to keep their edge for a bye in the first round of the playoffs. DID THEY? They are better than Ari, better defense, better offense...but DID THEY WIN?  NO!  They had a let down. They wrapped up their division the week before and clearly they did not play up to their capacity or ability at Ari. In fact, the Niner team I saw playing in that game absolutely STUNK!
Wrapping up your division is a huge motivator. Playing for a bye is not as great.
Again, learn to read and comprehend before you crap all over someone who said something which can not be contradicted!

Had you simply stated that while my statement was true, you would like to point out that you believe the "bye factor" motivation still remaining was very big in your estimation...you could have appeared intelligent and we could have had normal conversation from there.

this is a big deal.  some of the logic and correlation people use is atrocious.  the bottom line is... the man who turned this swiss cheese french army bottom feeder defense into a lock down iron curtain will be out for at least 2 games.  luckily, they get the panthers and the dolts

there is no correlation between this and the saints sean payton.  the saints blew out the dolts in the first game with paytons absence then followed that up with the clunker at st louis. 

im no longer comfortable laying points with houston even against the panthers or the colts.  but they will probably squeak out the straight up victories in both. 

This team has come a long way and will remain the #1 ranked defense in the league. I'm pretty sure they'll be focused with or without Wade. Kubiak will make sure his coaching staff and players will step up and remain focused to hold onto the #1 AFC seed.

Not preaching to the choir here but Texans D are young and they are studs...these guys are relentless. Wade didn't have to do much but minor adjustments..which Herring is more than capable of. The scheme is already in place and they (defense) just attack each down....no worries.

Yates threw 40 passes last week...I don't think Kubiak is tweaking any playbook for him, in other words, Yates is just picking up where Schaub, Leinart left off. Rick Smith knew what he had in Yates, he knew this guy's football IQ and he knew that when the time came, Yates was ready and he has shown that he is.

If you like Panthers, take the ML, you won't need the points. Much more value...and if you like the Texans, give the pts...70% of the time, the fav will win and cover the minus pts, regardless of what it is if you like the side in this spot. Just saying.......but get accurate information...not BS some of these ppl are spewing out here on covers.com - with all due respect.
