Since winning 5 out of 6, the Canes have gone on a miserable 3-13 run (ALL in regulation) and have lost their last 6 straight.
Since getting shellacked 6-2 by Buffalo and 9-2 by Nashville in succession, the Leafs have gone 10-1-1 in their last 12, losing only to NJ and Pit (in OT). They have also won their last 6 straight, INCLUDING the other night against the best team in the league.
We have to keep in mind that 10 of those 12 games were at home. Home ice isn't necessarily the be all and end all in hockey but Randy Carlyle loves line match-ups. On the road, he's unable to do this.
Tonight, they go on the road to play the lowly Hurricanes who are in the NHL basement even behind the Oilers. Yikes. After that, it's back home to face the Flyers on Saturday. And THEN, back on the road again for 7 straight games, and they don't play again at home for more than 2 weeks.
Being a Toronto fan, I hope I'm VERY wrong. This just smells like a CLASSIC Maple Leafs letdown spot, and I'm pretty sure the oddsmakers, who have the line hovering around -136, agree with me.
Food for thought, is all.

talk about a "mismatch on paper" https://prosportsdaily.sportsdirectinc.com/hockey/nhl-matchups.aspx?page=/data/NHL/matchups/g2_summary_6.html shows, like weeble said, Leafs winning last 6 and 8 of last 9. also scored at least 4 GF's in 7 of last 9. Canes lose last 6 with 3 of those @ home and scored just 1 GF in each game
Leafs Bernier (likely) won last 4 and 6 of last 7 all @ ACC with 2 GA's or less his last 4. Canes Ward (confirmed) lost last 4 and 7 of last 9 mostly from "no goal support". allowed just 2 GA's or less in 5 of last 7. only recent wins were @ Penguins 4-2 and vs Predators 2-1.
Hurricanes DID beat the Leafs last season 6-1 @ Raleigh.
like I said, "mismatch on paper" BUT last night the OVER in Vancouver looked like a "lock" with the team and goalie stats going into that game. result? 2-0 Stars shutout for Lehtonen who had given up at least 3 GA's in 5 of his previous 7. GO FIGURE

Look at the line. That should tell you a lot. I mean the Leafs are less than -140 on one of my books and right at -140 on another. Maybe they do win, I mean on paper they absolutely should. But this is the exact type of game they are known for losing.

line the same from the overnight where I book @ Leafs -135 and -1 1/2 +210 puckline. I jumped on both last night BUT now I'm getting nervous. like wheaty says, just the kind of game the Leafs tend to mess up

The Maple leafs have excelled recently because of offense alone, without it they're a mid tier team at best.Hence if CAR gets quality goaltending at home they have better than a 65% chance of winning.

On the contrary, IMO. I think a lot of their success has been due to the outstanding goaltending by Bernier (and, at times, Reimer). They're being outshot most nights and still winning. Not only that but there were a few games in this run where they had no real business of winning. You needn't look any further than the Wings game as a prime example.

Yep
You learn more from losing than winning. You learn how to keep going.

Normally, the majority of you are correct in feeling strong on an upset here, but this is different. If the leafs win and Canadians lose tonight, the Leafs will jump to 2nd place in the eastern conference. That should keep them focused and hungry to keep this win train rolling against a clearly weaker, and slumping, team.

Focused and hungry doesn't always = win. I mean, personally, these guys are professionals and they SHOULD be focused and hungry most (if not all) of the time.
But, like I said, I hope I'm the furthest thing from right on this one.

good to see you posting, KS. think evryone always appreciates your thoughts. Ward has been pretty good lately despite the Canes recent record. their losing been "NO goal support"
