Pretty sure they aren't counting the easy ones anymore...not positive though
The past 2-3 seasons if a dump in from center hit the net they called it a save. Or if a dump in from blue line slow rolled in and the goalie pushed it off to corner they would put down a save. As if the net was empty the puck would have gone in....almost positive this is no longer happening as numbers have plummeted...like insane...leaders last 2-3 years were 34-36 sog per game...now barely any teams over 31
Pretty sure books/nhl went to every rink and made sure what they wanted the scorekeepers to log as a shot on goal....
The numbers have absolutely plummeted this year. And star players also seem to be shooting less....dunno if that's a league wide thing on maintaining puck possession instead of low,-chance shot on goal

Interesting - had not heard that, but agree the total overall Shot counts are definitely lower this year. All the way back to when I was a kid, any puck that had a chance to cross the Goal line inside the shadow of the pipes was a SOG. The description you state above just leads to fuckery by NHL.
I guess that is how all sports are going with replay in every sport now - give the league the chance to re-assess each critical play, and make the call based on Lord knows what kind of fuckery. Now we have persons making a judgement call if a dump-in was a SOG or not. If you dump it in on the goalie, and he bobbles it and it goes in, is that a Goal without a SOG...???

Exactly what is happening in my opinion. They want control over the decisions that can lead to payouts/non-payouts...
Also the puck possession thing could be a factor..but that wouldnt plummet the numbers like they have plummeted....
