Starting in 2021, a player's skate will not have to be in contact with the blue line to be considered onside.
The "plane" designation means players will no longer have to drag their skates along the ice as they cross into their attacking zone, and it could help reduce coach's challenges. Last season, there were 75 coach's challenges for offside, with 56 overturned, per Scouting the Refs.
The new language for Rule 83.1 reads: "A player is onside when either of his skates are in contact with the blue line, or on his own side of the line, at the instant the puck completely crosses the leading edge of the blue line."

As an old bastaard...I like things the way when I played except for two-line offsides but I am OK with this. But...there will still be challenges...hopefully just not as many.

I like this rule. We have to see many more attempts for speed, control and discipline and weakness from the oppositions defense. This is a true maker of the transition of players about to go over the wall for defense and offensive style of play. This makes the game fast and the coach and players don’t sit on the bench laughing and spitting for no reason. This is a marker of competition and blood. The “win” is what’s matter...!!!! This is no reason to take sides on the reasons, but I am curious to see weak footers that go against this rule!
