Not saying Philly is a bad hockey town, it isn't. I am just arguing that it isn't the #1, as you seemed to agree with ESPN. And we both know ESPN talking about hockey, outside of Melrose, has no leg to stand on.
Detroit has just as many pro teams as Philly and an even stronger collegiate/university draw. Because the number of seats in each arena vary considerably, you have to take a look not at total attendance, but percentage full. In that regard, Philly has done really well, and so has Detroit, Chicago, and Montreal. In fact, I think these are the Top Four cities for NHL right now and in the past half-decade.
However, just about everywhere you go, you hear the ubiquitous "Let's Go Red Wings!" chant....in every arena. And when the games are in sh!tty arenas, like Florida, Arizona, Carolina, etc., this chants DROWNS OUT the home fans completely.
