Yes the ESPN thing is irrelevant but the numbers over years to not lie and this little stat speaks volumes for an American city in comparison. In the early 2000's the Penguins finished dead last in the NHL and in that season their attendance finished dead last in the NHL. Two season later the Flyers finished dead last in the NHL but yet they finished 6th on attendance in the NHL that season. An American city finished ahead of a few Canadian cities and some other very successful American hockey cities while finishing dead last and having the option of a full slate of every other sport there is, does say something that does not leave much room for debate
Not saying Philly is a bad hockey town, it isn't. I am just arguing that it isn't the #1, as you seemed to agree with ESPN. And we both know ESPN talking about hockey, outside of Melrose, has no leg to stand on.
Detroit has just as many pro teams as Philly and an even stronger collegiate/university draw. Because the number of seats in each arena vary considerably, you have to take a look not at total attendance, but percentage full. In that regard, Philly has done really well, and so has Detroit, Chicago, and Montreal. In fact, I think these are the Top Four cities for NHL right now and in the past half-decade.
However, just about everywhere you go, you hear the ubiquitous "Let's Go Red Wings!" chant....in every arena. And when the games are in sh!tty arenas, like Florida, Arizona, Carolina, etc., this chants DROWNS OUT the home fans completely.

I've been to many cities to watch Philly play and the arenas are always packed with Flyer fans and they are loud. I know here in Toronto many more Flyer fans attend Leaf Flyer games than Red Wings fans do Detroit games, despite us being so close to Detroit so that tells me something.
Here is the attendance for this season and keep in mind while viewing it that my Flyers have absolutely sucked this season right from their very horrible start of the season. The years the Wings have not done as well, which is very rare as we both know, they have not done as well as the Flyers do during their lean season and that is when you find out about your fans so I will stand by the ESPN thing which also gauges merchandise bought and other such miscellaneous things, They simply went by numbers it was not really opinion based.

Fourth in overall attendance in one of your teams worst seasons in decades says a crap load about their local fan base, never mind their abundance of loyal fans like myself abroad that just bought a new Flyers cap the other day and went to see them here in Toronto and in Montreal this season, regardless of how horrible they were playing. I know a ton of people that jumped on the Wings fan bandwagon when they were winning Cups, Philly has not won one since 1975 and their fans like myself have never wavered.

Why would ANY Wings fans attend a Leafs v. Flyers game?
Before realignment, when Leafs and Wings were in the same conference, our Home and Home series was the best in the NHL. Leafs fans would take the train/drive to the Joe and fill a quarter of the arena and then the very next night Wings fans would do the same in Toronto.
After realignment, (Bettman, you wanker...) when we didn't play Toronto but maybe once, if even, a season, that disappeared.

Well safe to say the single point is in the bag now for the Sens with under 7 to go and a 2 goal lead. Just counting down a very brutal season for my boys now. Future is very bright however. New coach is needed and will be attained I am pretty certain. Be interesting to see what else is up. One thing is for sure Hexy will be patient and grow from within the organization.
With all that said, another Canadian team in, most in many years, Awesome to see NHL hockey so alive here again!

Try reading that whole thing again bud. Why would I be talking about Wing fans at a Leaf/Flyer game?? LOL no that would not make sense. You abandoned the second half of the statement. I will assume you are just trying to have some fun now?? Now read the whole thing. "Than wings fans do Detroit games". How could a Detroit game mean a Leaf/Flyer game? Anyway i'm all done here. Have a good one and try to cheer up and enjoy your weekend there Chief.

Polar have to admit not a big Flyers fan but you boys have a great fan base despite a 40 year Cup drought-I remember Detroit during the "Dead Wings" era prior to Stevie Y. being drafted and there weren't many fans...seem to have promise in Philly with a young team and the Chief behind the bench-good luck next season.
Thank you, and yes the Detroit arenas over the years are fukking funerals when their team has sucked, I recall them half empty. Their building also gets a crap load of people from across the border in Windsor to help fill their seats. Philly has no such assistance. From 1989 to 1993 my Flyers missed the playoff 5 straight painful years and I don't know one single Flyers fan that jumped ship and miraculously the arena stayed full every crappy season out of the five, just incredible for an American city in my opinion.

Sorry, I did read it wrong.
But that's obviously going to be the case since the Flyers and Leafs were in the East, and played each other much more often, while the Wings were in the West and rarely saw Toronto thanks to Scary Buttman.
That would be like saying there are more Wings fans at a Wings/Hawks game than Leafs fans at a Hawks/Leafs game in Chicago. Going to be obvious.
Go back to when the Wings and Leafs were in the same Conference, before Bettman screwed everything up, and that was the best rivalry in hockey and had the #1 cross-attendance of any two teams. And that stands true before the Flyers were even created.

Very easy drive from Detroit to Toronto bud. Should be loads of Wings fans at Leaf games, especially since as you just mentioned it's such an old bitter rivalry, but they don't make the drive. It's ok to agree to disagree. Both good fans let's leave it at that. I'm tired now you win lol.

Sens have been on fire and Flyers had a crap year.
If I made a play I would have posted it, this was just for fun, thought it would stir up some nerves lol. I posted my only play, just cashed it if you look in the forum right now. Have a good one!

How old are you, Polar_Bear? Because you might not have ever remembered "Detroit's arenas" being funerals since we have made the Playoffs 24 straight years in-a-row. That's MORE THAN HALF the time the Flyers have even been in existence.
And you being so young explains why you would not know that the Wings have ALWAYS had a strong Windsor contingent. As a matter of fact, our FIRST hockey season was played IN ONTARIO. And when the Cougars/Falcons/Wings started playing, there were only SIX teams. And for most Southeastern Canadians, Montreal and Toronto were too far away to support. Now you understand why the Wings are not only Detroit's team, but Southern Ontario's as well.

I already laid this out for you. Detroit v. Toronto was the best rivalry in hockey until the Conference switch. What kind of rivalry would there be if you didn't play the other team at all? Why would you go there?
How many Philly fans make the trip to see them play Columbus? See my point? Why would you bother?
It is about 4.5 hours by car to get to Toronto and that doesn't include the border hassle. Not an "easy drive" by any means.
I am not trying to win any argument, as you seem to think I am, I am merely pointing out that you points-of-reference are flimsy (how many hats are purchased or there are more of my fans at an in-conference game than your fans who never see this team anymore and are out-of-conference, etc.).

I'm as old as the Flyers organization so yes I remember the Wings sucking major dik for about 20 years before getting good again and I have seen and been in their arenas when they have been half empty and i'm well versed on hockey and it's history. If we're going to talk more we would have to have beers, real beers not that American horse piss LOL. LOL man seriously enjoy your weekend. I felt compelled to look back here before heading out with my dog.

Good to hear you've been a fan for a long time. I guess I have been hanging out in the NBA and NFL forums for too long and have gotten too defensive with all the johnny-come-lately "I LOVE THE HEAT!/SEAHAWKS!" idiots.
Have a good rest of your weekend!
