The amount of intrigue ahead of today's clash is going to be riveting! We see the Dees under their new caretaker coach in Todd Viney try and send the club in the right direction for their remaining 5 matches for season 2011. They face Carlton who are sitting 3rd on the ladder but starting to feel the pressure of teams just below them so today's game is as important as any match for both teams.
Bookies have set the line at -39.5 points but I am a little surprised considering Melbourne's average losing margin is 70 points and no one is expecting them to even get close to Carlton today so why only a 6½ goal win? The weather may play a factor but I doubt it as the Blues have plenty of mature bodies across the ground and the midfield of Judd, Simpson, Murphy & Robinson have been in spectacular form for most of the season. Todd Viney made some pretty interesting changes and elected to drop Jurrah, Nicholson and Sylvia who just can't seem to find any consistency to his game. Regardless of what you read in the papers and the media, the Dees have an extremely talented crop of players with Trengove, McKenzie, Watts, Tapscott, Jones and of course Scully all future champions in the making. I am expecting an extremely close match today and some would say I'm stupid but I have seen the inconsistencies of the Melbourne footy club and their best is good enough to trouble a side like Carlton who rely heavily on small forward's to combine for majority of their goals. Melbourne will be put under pressure early, no doubt but I reckon the players have too much pride and too much at stake to roll over like they did last week. Young teams need time to develop but Melbourne's only worry is the dramatic form on a weekly basis but I got a sneaky suspicion the players were not all that comfortable playing under Dean Bailey (regardless of their stance when he was under the pump) a new coach is exactly what was needed and with the slim chance of finals footy still on the horizon, I cannot see Carlton dominating the game at all. It's also a match that will have extra intrigue as Carlton labelled Melbourne's game style as 'bruise free football'. Extra motivation will ensure this game is fiercly contested and you will not see any half attempted 2nd efforts from the Melbourne players today but a 100% contest for the entire game.
I'm taking Melbourne +39.5 and I wouldn't be one bit surprised if they win this game as I have seen their best footy and it can be quite electric in full motion. Good luck guys
