Seems like the hijinks are starting early this week:
***Matthews is calling for the law on rushed behinds to be changed. He thinks the one point is not enough penalty for getting out of danger and/or wasting time.
Seems like Matthews has given up on his Lions team and has turned into a full-time whinger now. First the bloody interchange rules, then the bench allotments, then the "I didn't get my boys up for Melbourne" guffaw, now the current soup ala mode is the rushed behind.
Saying that however, I somewhat agree and whilst I do not see any major need in changing the current law, the goal square bounce would be much fairer, I suppose, and make the game even more nervier and edgier than it already is. Imagine the Swans up 121-119 in the dying seconds on Carlton and getting flooded in their own backline, rush it back....121-120 now, only to have to suffer a bounce in the goal square. Would make for some great viewing.
I do not like the preseason law of three points. A behind is a behind is a behind and a behind is one point.
What do you guys think?

***Roos might be bringing back the biff with Barry Hall this round versus the Crows. Might as well as the Swans were down to their last straws in the 4th Quarter against the Blues. If you didn't get to see that game, do so if you can. So many injuries and blokes on a half-tank for the Swans and still took it to the Blues don by 28. Awesome.
I say, bring him back. He's got no more chances now so if he does something stupid, he is finished for the year. Might as well. He is done for the year via something stupid in Round 17 or Round 20, etc., so might as well put the tank in there and let him swing.
Who knows, he might actually have things in perspective now that so many Swans are hurt and out, that he might take it upon himself to lead the charge and keep the Swans in the Top 4 by playing fair and solid? Whereas before, he was just another inclusion. Interested to find out....

***Nick Davis is finished with the Swans. Roos bagged him and Davis didn't even bother showing up to rehab. Damn shame as he is a true talent if he keeps working at it and he did well with us this year when he was fit in.
I say, let him go to the Eagles. I am sure we'll see him again there and we'll see how he fancies playing for a team that makes the Dees look like Flag contenders nowadays.
Or maybe, that's what he wants? To stand out?
Whatever...

***Koschitzke is Out for the Saints this round for striking. One match ban.
***Fevola contract blahblahblah.....anyone else getting tired of this?
***Nice reflection summing up the Cats/Dogs blockbuster:
SELFISH: Too many Dogs went for personal glory instead of doing the team
thing. Geelong had 23 score assists, their opponents had seven. Six
minutes into the game two senior Bulldogs let their team down.
Jason Akermanis, under pressure near the boundary, should have
passed to skipper Brad Johnson. But no, he went for the
low-percentage shot at goal and missed. Johnson was disappointed,
but he shouldn't have carried on throwing his arms into the air to
show his displeasure. I've seen these two ignore each other too
often.
Contrast that with the Cats' two leading goalkickers, Cam Mooney
and Steve Johnson.
They have a personal bet on who delivers the most assists to his
teammates. On Saturday, Mooney and Johnson had two score assists
each. Akermanis and Brad Johnson had none.
***Essendon is down to 23 fit senior players this round.
***Chad Cornes is finished for the season.
***Richo may be back for the Tigers.
***Wojcinski will be in for the big clash against the Hawks this round.

***Still a lot of talking about Richmond's Joel Bowden icing the clock on the two behinds against the Bombers. But the best story of this match came at the beginning of the 4th Quarter. Classic:
Adding to the controversial finish, which keeps Richmond's finals
hopes alive, Bowden's teammate Nathan Brown was also under fire, from
his bench, after failing to chase Bomber Nathan Lovett-Murray with
enough gusto in the first minute of the frenetic last term.
"The runner came out and said my chase was p--- weak," said Brown,
who responded with three match-winning goals in the next 15 minutes.
"No one likes to hear that sort of criticism. You take it on board and you go from there."
HAHAHA! Classic!

as much as I hate new rule changes, I think Matthews is right. It would certainly make it more nerve racking in the last couple of mins in a close game, if players were forced to keep it in the field of play.

Nick Davis is gone. He did a similar thing to Collingwood. He screwed
them into a late draft pick because he was gone at the last moment...
he probably won't get much of a game. He is a great talent but doesn't
get the ball enough anymore.
Bowden is a genius. An article said that and I totally agree. Matthews
said that he used the rules to his advantage which is absolutely
correct. Parly it's because no one was charging in at him... so that's
not smart by the players around the square. Can't blame the coaching
because it really wasn't enough time for a message to get out. I don't
think the rule will change but I do think the tactics will. Flooding
didn't change the rules much... the other coaches reacted.
Also, I wouldn't say the Blues are a sure thing... but the eGirls
should be. With Kosi out, the Saints will struggle a bit but all they
need is someone to try and tag Cox. Strange how rucks almost never get
tagged.
All odds look about right with Cats, Saints and Port looking the picks... but would definitely wait for the lines.

I disagree...
“We’ve still got 26 available … it sounds like [I’m] talking as if it’s a luxury
but you only need 22 [each week].

In fact I think they should also introduce the play-on from the NAB cup. It frustrates me that teams including Sydney can kick to each other at the end of quarters not just the 4th but all of them. This can happen with 3 minutes left in the quarter which combined is like a half a quarter of game play.

I am with Hendy and Leigh Matthews.

Davis is gone. He has signalled where he wants to go. Sadly even if Davis plays to the best of his ability the thing with Paul Roos is personal.
The longer this thing Fev drags on the less likely it is in my mind that he will sign with Carlton on his terms. If other teams wanted him then Fev would have signed with them I have no doubt. He is a potential 100 goal a seaon forward but comes with to much baggage. One day he tries and kick a bag the next day he can't be arsed to even job 2 metres.
I think J Browns contract is due as is Buddy's. Lots of good forwards potentially coming onto the market at the end of the season.

ps. I am not cynical when I say that it was in the Swans best interest to get an apology from Swann. Sydney would want to get from the Weagles for Davis.
"We will swap you Davis for Cox"

I do think there could be a few changes to the current laws, but then it becomes an issue of which changes are good changes and which changes are not?
As I mentioned before, I do not think anything is that big of a stand-out right now to warrant anything being done. If you don't want to get jobbed by two rushed behinds at the end of the match, then don't be down by more than two at the end of the match!

Will be a very interesting off-season.
And one of the reasons I say that is I expect at least one of these top blokes to land with the Swans. 100% sure. The Swans not only offer a top-flight coach in Roos and a winning heritage, but also a team chemistry and comraderie that would be very tempting for those lost and looking for that supportive home. Even after the Blues games, the FOX announcers made special comment about the typical Swans belief in one another when the camera switched to the Swans' post-match huddle.
Although Fev got my rattle with those cheap shots, mostly head shots, this past round on the Swans, I wouldn't mind him coming over our way next season...

---Cats ML @ $1.39 - They don't lose this match, IMO.
---Small lean on the Pies -22.5. I think the Bombers are too banged up and Collingwood will want to strike back after that disappointment against the Roos.
---Richmond for sure. Brisbane is filth and anything away from the Gabba will keep them being exposed for such. (BTW...I like the Brisbane players and the club, so when I make raw comments about them, it is solely regarding their form and play on the pitch. )
---Swans would normally be a banker here, as Adelaide cannot score anymore and the Swans have the AFL's #1 defense.....but with so many banged up or out.....I have to think about this some more. Being at the SCG, after not playing there for a while, has deflated this line in the Swans' favor however.
---Leaning Bulldogs minus the points. I capped this one at -25/-26 earlier in the week, so to see -21.5 has got me peaked a bit.
Strange, last round, I loved dogs and now this round I have flopped to favorites. Hmmmmm...

I did actually work out the ratio of sides coming back from WA and covering the spread the next week....put the stats in Rod_Steel's thread about 6 weeks ago. Don't remember what it was but the ratio was well and truely against sides coming back, last week was Rich and they didn't cover, but the couple of weeks before that they did...go figure
Anyway, after all the stuff they have been through all year and then again this week, bottom of the ladder while the Roo's look 'better than average' at the moment, and also in the 8 I think this is a good game and opportunity for them

So you like the Roos 27+?
Thing is, with Melbourne, will they be the same old Dees who look good for a while and collapse hard after a while? Or the sticky bee who stays around for the entire time? The Dees are getting harder and harder to figure out...

Luke Hodge is in doubt for the Hawks against Geelong.
The star midfielder's partner, Lauren Kirkman, is due to give birth to
their first child and the Hawks' vice-captain has stated his intention
to attend the birth ahead of playing in the match widely tipped to be a
pre-cursor to this year's grand final.
Hawthorn will have a player on standby in case Hodge is absent.
"Like
all pregnancies, there's probably a two-to-three week window when
Lauren will have the baby and if it happens to come tomorrow afternoon
or late evening then Hodge will miss the game," coach Alastair Clarkson
said.
