Wanna know why the sport is so fuked up? I went online to find out about the top kennels at Dairyland to see if I might purchase a dog from one them.
Guess what? Not one of them even has a website nor does DAIRYLAND have any trainer contact info. So, I emailed the track to see if they can put me in touch with someone from a decent kennel.
Then I went o the Greyhound Racing Assoc. website and they have a section on owning dogs. According to them, you can buy a dog for anywhere from $500 to $4000 with a monthly kennel cost of $80-$120.
Owners take on a purse is about 35% with the purses for most ranges totalling $100 to $300. So if my dog wins a $100 race, I get $35....almost a half-months boarding fee...at the low end.
Holy Lassie! What a difference compared to owning horses.
In Illinois, the cost to buy a horse that racing, even a cheap claimer, is anywhere from $4000 to ???? You can buy a cheap Illinois bred yearling for $1500 and while they are training up to their racing debut it will cost about $500-$800 per month in Illinois.
After a horse starts racing, it's about $2000 per month including the vet here in Illinois. Our purses are 60% for the owner, so if you win a purse of $28,000, you will collect around $18,000. In Illinois and other states, with a state bred horse, you will collect 60% of the added purse in addition to the condition purse.
Compared to horses dogs are......dogs!
Actually, it might be cheaper to buy a poodle and just feed him table scraps and just let him shit in the back yard.
No money in owning greyhounds unless you have a real top notch dog. A stakes dog.
Sure would be kind of fun for awhile though. I have thought about buying one myself several times.
If Geneva Lakes was still open I might have done it. I won't do it at Dairyland.
