I'd love to see the hawks get through and I have a sneaky they will. Cats deserve to be favourites for the series but this resting of players before finals has had a habit of backfiring (across many sports) and I reckon they need to put a very good performance in the bank with everyone on deck tomorrow or risk going in under-cooked against the Hawks in the semis.
Illawarra was super impressive imo last night in a game they didn't need to win. Last night, as much as any of their impressive wins this season, was a statement from the hawks that they're a very serious team.
Rebounding and their record in perth will be the big hurdles but with regards to the former, they've got some individuals for whom that old 'hoodoo' really doesn't apply - Lisch, Penney & Ogilvy.
Melbourne should get through on the other side by virtue of home court. Last year proved you never write the breakers off when the going gets serious because they were sleep-walking through the last few games of the reg season and then flipped the switch in a big way when the finals began.
But do they want it badly enough this time? Wouldn't blame them if they didn't given they've had so much success over the last few years.

Perths biggest problem is injuries. Prather has a hamstring that won't heal properly, Knight is nursing a shoulder that will eventually require surgery and Jawai is probably the biggest concern with his lower back, he might not even play in the semi finals. A real dose of bad luck for the Cats. Illawarra will never have a better chance to beat them than in this series.

With you Dave, like Hawks and Melbourne. Have futures pending on Melbourne to win the thing. Lets not forget, the last game Hawks went to Perth, Perth had no injuries and Penney was missing from the Hawks and the Hawks were beaten up on a massive scheduling issue as they had been everywhere around Oz and NZ before that Perth game. When they play the finals, Hawks will be fresh and like Freddie said, Perth have some massive injuries that just don't seem to be healing quick enough.
As for the other series, will be a great battle. Just worries me which NZ side shows up. The NZ side that has Webster going crazy can be the best in the league or the NZ side that no one shows up apart from Abercrombie. Hate to say it but I feel as though NZ's lack of free throw accuracy might cost them in the finals series if it remains close. Their free throws are horrendous and could cost them.. Just think Melbourne at home, will be hard to beat. Just wish it was a 5 game series rather than 3. I think 5 would be awesome for TV and to really make the NBL great this season.

On a slightly separate note, a big story should break this week regarding a certain coach of a domestic hoops team who's being investigated for betting on matches involving *THEIR* own team (on AND against is my mail)

What the... You serious Jive? Does that have something to do with the Perth vs Kings game earlier this week? I heard something along the lines of some players/coaches apparently betting on the Kings H2H early in the week before the public knew that Perth were resting 4 starters.
