but I disagree with your first post. The benefits of organized religion are often overshadowed by its few harms. Unfortunately, nobody has ever enumerated the lives saved and charity done in the name of God. I believe these benefits would certainly dwarf all the wars and prejudice ever caused by religious beliefs. For many, religion serves to provide a model for reverence, respect, and love; all of which are commendable virtues. Additionally, it makes people feel better about themselves.

I believe people like Richard Dawkins and many of my former professors who zealously attack organized religion do more harm than good. They preach as much hate as the religious fanatics.

Well said    It's refreshing and unexpected to hear a young person with an open mind towards religion these days.  Especially one that is going through the brain-washing and indoctrination    that neo-liberal professors provide.

Of all places for a religious discussion, the Penalty Box!  Here is my religion"  Live and let live.  As long as your religion does not encroach upon others (by wanting to kill them for being Christians etc) I firmly believe that you should believe what you want and let all others believe what they want.  Nothing can be gained by arguments about religion because no one's mind will be changed by another person's ideas about religion.  Organized religion can be really bad about PUSHING what they believe on others.  I hope you are happy in whatever you believe.  Kindly allow others to go their own way.

that's the fear/insecurity/ignorance part of religion that affects so many people, or at least so many of the outspoken people. let everyone have his/her own beliefs and practices, don't assume one reasonable belief is better or worse than another, don't be so fuckin scared to be unsure, or in other words, know the difference between "I know", I believe" and "I want to believe" and religion has a perfectly good place in this world, in my opinion.  but a history of centuries of ignorance, discrimination and persecution, millions of deaths and a society that is generally more influenced by fear and insecurity than progressive thinking says this is only wishful thinking.
