Read my posts. I am overly generous and I always tip a minimum of 20%. I do not agree with not tipping either but I do not think that it should be viewed as a requirement.

If someone does not want to tip that is on them.

For example I think it is just plain stupid to tip a lot of people.

I always tip $5 on my $20 haircut. That is 25%. It do it just because it seems like the thing to do. But if you think about it why the hell should I do that? Why should I have to pay for a service and then tip on top of it? Especially since I had no say in the original price that I pay. That is a price that the barber shop decided they wanted to charge. So while I always tip the guy -- my question again is why does this make sense. Is the implication that if I do not tip that I will get a subpar effort from the barber?  I know that is the case but does that make sense?

Same theory for a taxi, a doorman, the curb side guy who take your bags at the airport, a bartender etc...

The point is that while I always tip it seems odd some times.

Do you tip your doctor, your banker, your dentist, the guy who scans your food at the grocery store, etc...  The answer is no you do not. You pay them the agreed upon fee and go on your way.
 Why is it any different for other walks of life?

My doctors, bankers and dentist... don't make $3 an hour after they figure in the tips, so they make min wage. 

But why is it our responsibility to make up for an asshole business owner who does not want to pay? Essentially that is saying that we as the customer are responsible for helping to pay for the owners staff. While I still do it, it makes no sense to me.

And as Slovak said above, often times we are already getting hit with additional charges for things like delivery etc...

by the way this is a bad point. Isn't this the very thing that we are debating?

Mattbrot-- I agree with you that it's a shit thing to do on his part but it's not a generous/luxury thing as you put it. By law, those rely on tips are exempted from min. wages. In other words, they could work below min. wages and the worst part is the gov. expect them to earn over for tax purposes.

matt BrotI will totally view you differently in the future for your "understanding" of my current livelihood. No server is "entitled to any % of tip/bill" they need to individually earn it by their level of customer service (ie Comfortability) that rightfully earns their "gratuity" Nobody deserves a % tip just because they "choose" to engage in providing that service. Attitude and pleasantness should be "EARNED" not entitled "to" because you "have to" do that as part of your J-O-B

Mattbrot, it's not REQUIRED but it's not exactly as black and white as you put it. Otherwise, why are those people being exempted from the protection of the law? I've never said "not tipping" consitutes breaking of any contract!!  Also, if the owners are required to pay more for their workers, who do you think they will pass their costs to?? It's always been set up that way.

I used to work in the service industry when I went to college so I understand where they are coming from and I am gulity of over-tipping. YES, I still think the OP was wrong. Lastly, the servers have to earn it!!
