Nothing like taking 10 xanax before you go to the bar to get a few drinks in you before taking 5 perc 30's and then smoking a few marlboros on your way to eat a steak and seafood before fucking a hooker on your way to relax at Foxwoods.

gambling and other behavioral addictions are interesting because there is no physical ceiling... with substances eventually you will overdose or at least have a ceiling on the amount you can consumed (you can only smoke so much weed)...
gambling you can keep going till you run out of money or get cut off...
so I often tell people I see that the amount of money they would spend drinking all day they could put down in a single bet... so from a financial damage standpoint gambling/shopping is worse...
also substances are artificial... behavioral addictions like gambling are messing with your own body chemistry... so there is a weird level of control that can happen...
Like say you are trying to stop drinking... simply dont put alcohol in your body is the answer... but the stop gambling is much harder because it is all in your mind...
you could gamble on what time I post on... is it and odd or even moment... you can make a bet in your own mind and relapse at anytime in a way that you cant with substances...

Many people would start to lose it after being deprived of the internet for 24 hours or longer.
The worst addictions are the ones that consume and dictate your lifestyle in negative ways. Drugs/Sex/Money seem to be the most often abused things in my opinion. Excess and the inability to control your actions consciously usually leads to addiction. There are also good addictions as well.

Internet addiction can pose some huge problems.

Fucking drugs, hands down. And I know because I have kicked many of them, from benzos to addy/ritalin to ciggs to opiates.
Even weed is addictive if you're a chronic user for a long period of time. Going on 12 years for me of smoking 5-6 bowls daily and I started quitting a few days ago. Been nauseous/ralphing, getting migraines and hot/cold sweats/chills.
I have not quit for more than two days since I began as a teenager. Using it for fun after a few years became self-medicating for ADD and anxiety. Decided to see how it felt to be sober. Never thought it would be this tough.
Weed also takes longer to beat the withdrawals because it stores in the fatty cells of your brain's neurons (neurotransmitter cells). A lot of people actually experience the worst symptoms after 3-4 weeks when the THC finally is detoxed from the body, unlike other drugs when it's 4-7 days.
Mikado makes a good point about balance/moderation. Even the most addictive tendencies can be kept in check if used in moderation. If I smoked weed only on the weekends, I'd have been fine. If a broke gambler would have made one value wager instead of 25 action bets, he'd be fine. And if that hooker would have only sucked .... ok, nm, but you get the point

A) you're weird, and I hope you're not a pedo yourself
B) you're wrong. drugs are MUCH harder to kick than nicotine. that was OK, for me at least ... benzos on the other hand--and weed now--not so much.
and heroin/crack/meth which i've never done, I've heard, are much, much, much worse than fucking ciggs. there are people who NEVER recover, mentally (brain/neurotransmitters) and physically (life-long addiction)

For starters, gambling is a very strong hard drug. You heard that right. For the extreme pathological degenerate gamblers, gambling provides release of dopamine, endorphins and some other addictive brain chemicals.
Gambling side-effects are well hidden until extreme cases, and even then it is hard to detect.
From a financial point of view, a compulsive gambler can blow away several years of salary in one turn of a card. Hardly any other drug addiction comes remotely close.
Gambling affects everything and everyone around the addict including his social life, work life, family life, the people around him and of course the finances of himself and others.
And finally, that "must have" feeling that you have for hard drugs when addicted can be 10 times stronger for gambling when a certain team is playing and our gambling addict needs the action, no matter what. After losing his last dollar, he WILL find a way to get action on that game. He will "borrow" money from friends and family upon urgent needs. He will emotionally blackmail peers that if he doesn't get the money he will take a beating or go to jail or something. And in extreme cases, commit theft or fraud to get the money for gambling.

My current addictions...10 being the most powerful and hardest to quit.
Gambling- 9/10 You know it's bad when you're betting on baseball and WNBA, the two worst sports to watch.
Weed-9/10 I quit for 2 days and I felt much better, but then I had to get high for the Anderson Silva fight. This addiction wouldn't be tough to kick if I hadn't been doing it for 10+ years
Porn/hookers- 7/10 after winning a bet, it's hard for me not to go down to the border and celebrate with some cheap curvy latina figures only 30 mins away
