What percentage of NBA games will you say are rigged/fixed?

Last night's LAC/ Minn game should have never gone over, but it did. LAC up three w/ 12 seconds left @ 101-98 never should have fouled , but they did; which led to 16 FT for both teams in 12 seconds !!!!!!  Line on the over was 205', and most public money was on the over, but I have to think there must have been some heavy money from somewhere on the under. Thank God I didn't play that fiasco!  The rigged games I would think overall is probably is @ 10%.

NBA refs make between $200k and $550k, depending on experience.

The problem with conspiracy theories like this is that it is all but impossible to successfully engineer as complex and widespread a deception as would be required to make this work. And if someone tried, their chances of being discovered are virtually certain.

Yet somehow a handful of guys on the internet have it all figured out. :)


This is flat out wrong. Games were greatly influenced by refs in the Donaghy era and Jeff Van Gundy and others screamed about it. No one important listened, and they were only "discovered" because Donaghy was a criminal gambling degenerate. It went on for years with plenty of people aware of it, but without any official action taken and plenty of official denials.

There's considerable evidence from academic studies that a small percentage of games are very likely subject to point shaving. Here is Justin Wolfers' work on NCAA basketball.

Hardly any are fixed, and games that do have some undue influence are because of a single corrupt individual, like Donohue.  Players/Coaches/Owners/League are not and never would be in on a 'fix' in the sense of affecting game outcomes so one bet loses/wins.  They have way too much money on the line (billions) that depends on the games not being like a WWE match.  

The NBA does try to influence games through the refs by affecting player expectations when a foul will be called and for what, but this is in order to put a better product on the floor (harsher fines for obvious flopping / no more hand checking / stuff like that) and not to affect over/under or spreads.  Just not worth it for the NBA to even contemplate going down this road.

Plus, if there really is some conspiracy where any significant number of games are 'fixed' (5%+) it would be IMPOSSIBLE to keep everyone quiet.  

I do buy the argument some games can be affected if unsavory elements get blackmail material on individual players / refs / coaches.  After the Clemson punter tried to run for a 14 yard first down against Carolina in the ACC championship game last weekend, I thought for sure he must have had some ulterior motive.

I agree the NBA is not fixing games or anything like that. But there's lots of incentive for refs or players to point shave, especially at the NCAA level, and that's all you need.

It happens in btw 1-2% of games, I would estimate. In college, that averages to every Saturday afternoon somewhere or other.

\Now there are instances where they make it a coin flip, so there is no guarantee on who will win. This actually happens very often

What about the Bulls game last night? Was that supposed to go over?

I'd say yes. That's why they scored 66 pts in the 4th.

I had the Over 203.5 on my parlay and they scored 204, made it by half pt.

How often do you see this happen?

Weird way to get the over. Suns scored 10 pts in 3rd quarter, then 42 in last.

I mean there is not way you will be winning if you do not factor in fixing on certain games..no way you winning.

Matter of fact..anyone that makes profit betting must understand that factor of the game of sports period.

I win and i know howmuch value understanding games are fixed does to me


Like i said in my openning thread..i said cleveland will win no doubt but no guarantee they will cover and there you have it.

Made a ton on live betting on that game if you know what i mean

stop dwelling on Donaghy, it was one rare occurrence. saying an NBA game is fixed is one thing, proving it is another, outside of the Donaghy scandal, there has not been one proven 'fix' in the history of the NBA, none, zero, if you are in disbelieve, post the link, or explain the proven fix, (their is none) college is another story, there have been numerous point shaving fixes, however none of late

the day's of Arnold Rothstein are a thing of the past, we live in the modern era of professional sports, camera's & policing the league's are a priority, with players, and referee's salary skyrocketing, the objective to fix a game in the American market has no attachment to financial reality; of course given the right circumstances, anything is possible,

Football 75-85ercent this year. Mainly sides. Last year about 55-60%


Basketball this year. Tough nut to crack. But I think the better question is which days of the week it happens more often. And usually it happens when there is no football in the same day. Like what someone else mentioned mainly national games. People love betting those games
