Dismissing omicron as mild downplays threat of higher virus transmissibility which can produce more hospitalizations than deadlier viruses.  Obviously, covid is more dangerous than influenza because of over 800,000 covid deaths in the US in 2 years.  Flu deaths usually range from 15,000 to 50,000 annually.  Vaccines may be the best explanation for omicron milder symptoms.  Fortunately, availability of vaccines help to reduce severe illness.  Despite increasing infections, hospitalizations are increasing at lower rate.  World health organization is optimistic that the worst of the pandemic may be over in 2022 if vaccination rate exceeds 70% in all countries.
