Why do good handicappers go tout after some success?

I used to enjoy reading Megalocks' analysis and picks here on Covers, just to find out he has gone tout. If you are consistently picking winners and having winning weeks why the need to charge people $150 for picks? Are the winnings from your betting not enough? Jesus, what an era of greed and gluttony we live in...

Reason is because there are idiots that WILL buy there picks haha. Even if they lose a bet, they are still winning cause people have bought there pick packages.

This, I imagine Mega had one of his better years last year. Typically, even if you're good you still always have the risk of a bad season, and why not take more money if it's there, he still gets to be the first one to wager his picks anyhow.

Let's do a little math with some extremely hypothetical numbers...

If just 500 people sign up for his website at $150 a pop (US dollars) that's $75K for the season (minus website costs we'll call 10K), so 65K net.  

In order to achieve that from betting his own picks, which if I recall were max 5 per week (sometimes less but we'll keep it simple) and 14 weeks of college football, that's 70 picks total.  Let's even assume he would be as good as last year's 70% clip he was hitting.  That would be 49 wins and 21 losses.  Playing best case scenario 5% lines on all those plays he would need to be betting $2544 per game in order to achieve the same net profit.  That's all under best-case scenarios...

Pretty easy to see why anyone would do this if they had skill and insight to offer that people would be willing pay for.  Nothing to do with greed, it just makes sense...

You are asking why, but why not. If they get people paying for it, they can make more, and make guarantee money. Bigger question is how is there so many people paying for picks.

One more thing I'll add to the OP...you speak as if guys like Mega are what the problem is with society but I'll make the argument it's actually quite the opposite.  Your post perfectly sums up that here was something you enjoyed and "valued", and yet you are now complaining about the fact that you can no longer have it for free.  If something is valuable to you, you should have no problem paying a fair price for it (maybe you think it's not a fair price so you don't buy...that is how a market works).  Why must everything be free for you??  I guess I should expect nothing less from someone born and bred in Quebec.

Your not looking at the big picture. If Mega has a losing streak he still has the money earned from his website. So win or lose, he wins.

Why not? There's people who pay for those services, it's the world we live in, you do things other people want or need, you get paid for them.

I would never pay for those things again, a couple of years ago I learned the hard way, because they are selling you a 50-50 crapshoot and at best they'll hit 65% - 70% of their plays and that's a historic season. 

But there's people that pay for those things, heck there's people that pay for virtual currency to play on an iphone game, so if you can cash on possible customers, you do it.

If I feed you winner for as long as he has on here.  Answer all the questions and taken the time to go over each and every game, for everyone that has asked.  That is a full time job and since he has provided you with enough money and winners.  All this one sided sharing over the years and now he wants a small slice of the pie that he built up for you?  Why are you willing not to give a small piece of your pie.  He is providing a service and in America when people provide such service 99% of the time that service has a few!  If you no longer want his service that's your decision.  

He has built something special and deserves his rewards.  He paid you first!!!!

I cap my own picks and have never tailed him.  To me it's too hard to tail someone with out some kind of thought.  I did this when I first started betting and every time when I lost I felt like a schmuck.

Anyways I feel like as much as he gave of his time and knowledge of you want his picks pony up the dough.  He has earned your business.

so enjoy the free winners he gave you and move along.  That is the problem with a free site.  People/posters come and go.  You want to stick with him you have that option.  

Learn to cap the games yourself and put the time and effort it takes to win.  Pay someone you trust to do this for you.  Get your azz kicked because you have to learn how to make good calls, or just quit doing this.

No I just skipped to what I think is the bottom line. 

I get your point, he wins and provides you with no value in losing picks.
There is risk in doing this and paying for picks is up to the individual.

Read my other posts about other options and don't complain when someone has been so very kind to share what he has done here for a long time.  

  
Make your own picks that's my point!  His fine efforts here are no longer free.  Pay him, find someone else to tail or make your own picks.  It's your money!  Be thankful.

Megalocks provides a service, nothing more. It is up to the consumer to decide whether or not it is worth what is being charged.

Going "tout" makes all of the sense in the world if it can be done. I believe someone already illustrated the math involved in clearing 75k for a football season through betting. And that is with complete discipline, proper money management and psychology.

Having a big bank roll, solid methodology, as well as dependable outs are 3 inputs that are necessary to make a living betting sports and often unrealistic to obtain.

Mega understands this concept and moved on to greener pastures....going to miss the entertainment value. "Crack pipe" picks were classic. Talented guy....Best of luck.

And you call him greedy for not giving those hours every day to you for nothing?

What he chooses to do is the capper's business

Plenty of greed around but if you can pick winners on a consistent basis and decide to do your example -  its works for everyone. Good business.

Not to mention the corollary to the outline I posted above, which is that much more damage can be done to the books with a successful capper in this way.

Instead, that one man betting over 2500 per game to achieve that net profit is equivalent to each of his 500 customers placing a $5 bet on each pick.  More realistically if each customer were to place a $100 bet on each game at the same success rate would equate to a liability of over $1.27 million to the books by the end of the year...isn't that what we're all trying to do essentially, beat the books.
