Do people become good at poker because they learn how to read other players (tendencies, expressions, mannerisms) or because they count cards?  Secondly, if it is either of these things then aren't they both eliminated when playing online because you can't see your opponent and the computer randomly generates a card and it doesn't matter which ones came before it?  I know they are probably rookie questions, but I would appreciate a genuine response.

The power of "Google" kid ... get some basic knowledge ... come back with better questions ... these are very easy to find ...

While these questions are extremely novice everyone needs to ask them at some point.

Anyways, heres a few books Ive read that will surely help. Some of it may be repetitive and basic but I guarantee you will pick up some things from each book that will help your game.

 

The Thoery of Poker by David Sklansky - This book is a good starting place because it really lays out the basic formula and goal when playing a poker hand. It teaches you that the decision is the important part, not the result

 

Super System by Doyle - this book is a little outdated but its the first real poker book of its time and if you plan on taking poker seriously you should at least read it once

 

SNG strategy by Colin Moshman - This book is great for a beginning SNG player

 

 

Theres obvioulsy lots more than that but thats a good starting point. Theres no doubt if you read those three books youd not only do better at the tables, but also be much more confident at the tables which obv will lead to even better results


LOL...the fact that you even mentioned sklansky or doyle's book is laughable....the game has changed SOOOOOO much over the last 5 years and I hate to tell you, but those books are BARELY even relevant anymore...subscribe to a coaching service if you want to get better fast...pocketfives.com has a directory to choose from...

He's at the absolute beginnig stages of the game, the books I mentioned are good for laying out the very basics of the game and then as he progresses he can join training sites. But yes as far as beating todays games those books alone are definitely not enough but imo its a good place for him to start since he has only been playing a few times.

Here is the TRUTH about playing poker SERIOUSLY... and this comes from someone (me) that played for a living 2004-2005.

Don't even try to get started unless you LOVE the game and you enjoy sitting at a table for 8 hrs or more at a time several times a week.  For the amount of hours that you are required to put in you will be making less than minimum wage.

I'm up some $13,000 but 13k over 2 years is not even 40% of min wage over that same time.

I have yet to make any positive money betting sports but it is something I enjoy doing.

You will be wasting your time struggling to break even over the long run.. so don't do it as a job but something you enjoy doing.

poker and sports betting, you could make more then min wage if you know what you are doing. So take sports betting you have to find the value bet of the day. Just read up on poker and go play on a site for fun just get yourself comfortable with the game . The thing with poker is that every hand is different from the last one. You have to treat poker or sports betting like a job you have to put your time in to make a profit.
