the brutal drought in the midwest is wreaking havoc on this years corn crop. in some areas of the country the crop is already dead.
however, some farmers are just sitting back and not doing a thing. just sitting in their farm houses and watching the crop die. they could fertilize and add pesticides to at least salvage a portion of their crop, but they aren't.
why you ask? because they will make more money cashing in on their government crop insurance than they would if they salvaged a portion of their crop. that's right. they just plow the crop under and say uncle sam, give me my check...
isnt that great? we will pay more for EVERYTHING (i dont have time to educate you on how corn is at the heart of food, fuel, etc costs), then we get to pay for the farmers insurance and the farmer gets to sit on his ass the rest of the year.
more government programs please....

the mindset that the avg farmer sits on his ass and gets rich is delusional. I feel sure there are many changes to be made for "fairness", as there are with all gov't programs, but i think you are being overly simplistic on the issue.

62% of the farms received no subsidies while 10% received 75% of all the subsidies...that my friend is the American way
it's so bad they are having to try and dig deeper wells. Talk to any farmer you know nd ask him if he would want his children to follow in his footsteps and i can guarantee you what the answer will be...

This is quietly one of the most corrupt and backwards industries in America. The insurance companies are making staggering profits. The top soil has been dissipating for decades. There are no incentives to plant alternative crops in stressful conditions. No foresight to prepare the fields for the next coming year.
Only America could turn a farmer into whatever this is.......

Yea, this is one Welfare program the Republicans love. Pretty simple really, Farmers vote Republican. Kinda pisses the whole "small gov't" bullshit out the door.
And anybody who thinks farmers aren't doing great is crazy. These Guys have been making record profits for a decade while the goverment hands them money. Crazy.
