When It Comes to Economic Success That's Happening, Let's Not Forget It's in the Red States

No matter how much President Joe Biden and the Democratic Party try to tout his supposed economic accomplishments, the president still gets low mark on his handling of the economy, devastatingly low, in fact. According toRealClearPolitics (RCP), using data from April 7-May 17, the president is at 36.3 percent approval rating on the economy, while 59.6 percent disapprove. That may have something to do with how the economic successes that are taking place in this country are occurring in states led by Republicans. 

On Friday, the Department of Labor released dataon the state employment and unemployment figures, which is at 3.6 percent nationwide. The states withthe lowest unemployment rates are Nebraska and Utah, at 1.9 percent each. Overall, eight of the 10 states with the lowest unemployment rates are led by Republican legislatures. 

The top 10 include Nebraska and Utah, as well as Indiana and Minnesota where the rate is at 2.2 percent; Montana, New Hampshire, and South Dakota, where it is at 2.3 percent; Kansas where it is 2.4 percent; Vermont, where it is at 2.5 percent; and Idaho, where it is at 2.6 percent. 

Put another way, 20 of the 25 states with the lowest unemployment rates are led by Republican governors. And, 17 states hit new record low unemployment rates, 13 of which have Republican governors and 16 have Republican-controlled legislatures.

District of Columbia, which is controlled by Mayor Muriel Bowser, a Democrat, has the highest unemployment rate, at 5.8 percent. Seven of the 10 states with the highest unemployment rate are led by Democrats. 

Including D.C., the top 10 states include D.C., as well as New Mexico where it is at 5.3 percent; Nevada where it is at 5.0 percent; Alaska where it is at 4.9 percent; Pennsylvania where it is at 4.8 percent; California and Illinois where it is at 4.6 percent; Delaware and New York where it is at 4.5 percent; and Michigan and Texas, which are at 4.3 percent. 

The Republican State Leadership Committee (RSLC) was quick to notice. 

"The recipe for a weak economy at the state level is a Democrat-controlled the legislature mimicking the failing tax-and-spend policies of Joe Biden," said RSLC Communications Director Andrew Romeo. "For Americans living in Democrat-led states, there has been no relief from the Biden economy that has increased the cost of living, driven down true wages, and reduced job opportunities. But state Republicans are showing the path forward and will keep countering Biden’s failures by passing tax cuts, reducing regulations, and protecting individual liberty to ensure that their state economies are prosperous for small businesses, workers, and families now and for years to come."

Responses to the Wuhan coronavirus' effect on the economy may have something else to do with it. Nine of the 10 states for job recovery are led by Republican governors, and in all 10, there's a Republican-controlled legislature, as the Republican National Committee (RNC) took note of. 

"In spite of Joe Biden and Democrats’ failed economic agenda that has hardworking Americans struggling to afford everything from gas to groceries, Republican-led states are delivering jobs and economic opportunity," RNC Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel said. "The numbers don’t lie -- for another month nine of the top 10 states for jobs recovered since the coronavirus pandemic began are led by Republican governors, and all 10 states have Republican-controlled legislatures. While Joe Biden tries his best to tank our economy, Republican leaders will continue to show voters how conservative, pro-growth policies deliver for all Americans."

Republican-led states have recovered over 100 percent of their lost jobs, compared to the 87 percent in Democratic-run states. 

The economy is improving in Republican-led states in other ways. This includes when it comes to the leadership in the 10 states with the highest increase in personal income from 2020 to 2021, according tothe Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA). 

A CBS News/YouGov pollfrom last month has gained lots of attention, with a key takeawaybeing Americans' concerns with inflation. That poll had Biden at just a 37 percent approval rating on the economy, and a 31 percent approval rating on his handling of inflation. 

The poll did show, though, that a majority of respondents, at 56 percent said their local job market looked good. This included a plurality, at 39 percent, who said it was "fairly good."

Such a part of the poll went noticed by The Washington Times editorial board in an editorial titled "Republican states v. Team Biden" from April 17:

At the same time, despite the best efforts of Mr. Biden, Americans see some bright spots in their state and local economies. In the CBS News poll, 56% said their local job market was good; just 29% said it was bad. This is without a doubt driven by experiences in states governed by Republicans.

Americans’ confidence in states governed by Republicans is well placed. Most of the top states (14 of the top 15 states) for jobs recovered since March of 2020 are governed by Republicans, and 17 of the 20 states with the lowest unemployment rates are led by Republicans. The 10 states with the highest increase in personal income from 2020 to 2021 are run by Republicans.

Thousands of companies, including industry titans like Tesla, that were historically based in Silicon Valley or Wall Street have left their blue state homes in search of less taxes and regulations in red states. As a result, most new tech jobs in the country aren’t in California; they are in Florida and Texas. 

It isn’t just businesses. From 2020 to 2021, 9 of the 10 states with the highest net in-migration were governed by Republicans.

Last month, the RSLC also highlighted in a press releasehow 18 GOP-led states have cut taxes, as such stateshave been doing for months. 

The highest is 5%

That is great news for the Biden administration.

This guy is really writing about economic success in Montana, Nebraska, Vermont, South Dakota, New Hampshire, and Idaho. 

Yeah each of these states are major contributors to the national economy. 

Huge success. 

Another follow up on this and ideas on why some areas have seemed to be getting back to work so much quicker:

The good news is our economic recovery from the pandemic is finally underway. The bad news is that it’s going a lot slower in blue states than red states — thanks to foolish big-government policies.
This is the inescapable conclusion revealed by the latest jobs and unemployment data.
“The unemployment rate in April nationwide was 6.1%, but this obscures giant variations in the states,” the Wall Street Journal reports. “With some exceptions, those run by Democrats such as California (8.3%) and New York (8.2%) continued to suffer significantly higher unemployment than those led by Republicans such as South Dakota (2.8%) and Montana (3.7%).”

The difference really is unusually glaring. Of the top 10 states with the lowest unemployment rates in April, nine have Republican governors. What’s behind this destructive discrepancy?

Economist Dan Mitchell looked at these figures and concluded that there’s “a clear relationship between joblessness and the degree to which states pursue big-government policies.”

In particular, the unemployment rates different states are experiencing are strongly correlated with the harshness and length of the pandemic lockdowns their state governments imposed. With a few exceptions, Republican governors rolled back restrictions on the economy much faster than their Democratic counterparts.

This is clearly one of the major drivers behind the differing unemployment rates. In fact, the Wall Street Journal notes that the only Democratic-controlled state in the 10 states with the best unemployment rates is Wisconsin, where the state Supreme Court forcibly nullified the governor’s overzealous lockdown measures. This trend in lockdown-state-versus-free-state unemployment can be traced back through February.

To make matters even worse, these sweeping regulations didn’t clearly correspond with better COVID-19 outcomes — despite their drastic economic costs.

There’s one other major policy factor that is likely contributing to the discrepancy.

When Congress rushed through trillions in wasteful and fraud-rife “COVID-relief” emergency spending, it created a broken unemployment welfare system that pays most unemployed people more not to work. The average beneficiary is making the equivalent of $17.13 an hour on benefits. (Many in high-benefit states such as Massachusetts are earning even more!)

This is creating a clear work disincentive, discouraging people from returning even to well-paying $15 an hour jobs — simultaneously giving birth to the dysfunctional twins of a labor shortage and high unemployment levels.

However, Republican-led states such as Texas have started rejecting the federal welfare expansion en masse, restoring economic sanity to their states’ safety nets. With blue states likely to cling to the benefits until they (hopefully) expire in September, this difference will surely exacerbate the unemployment discrepancy.

We should all want to see the entire country recover quickly and fully from the pandemic’s economic fallout. So, the unequal recovery in red and blue states is not a partisan victory to celebrate. It’s a tragedy. But it’s one where foolish progressive policy is directly to blame.

 I've been partying all night. Watched my Warriors murder tonight, after going to the game Friday. Went to the Bauhaus show, which was fucking sick. Partied how I party, all the way up to the moment where I had to head to the airport and catch my flight. In an Uber right now. I'm not the guy to defend any Democrat politician, or any of their policy, but this take is a fucking joke. "Oh, look at Utah. The unemployment is so low." Have you ever been to Utah? There's nothing fucking there. It's not hard to dramatically sway unemployment numbers in a state with the population the size of Utah. Or many of the states at the top of the list you're heralding. You're holding that up as a indicator of the success of GOP policy? Ok. What did the GOP actually do?" How many of those jobs pay a fair wage commensurate with the cost of living in said states?

Small southern states see a growth in service industry jobs from people moving in from states like California and dudes try to say, "See, the GOP are doing things right!" GTFOOH. This shit's a joke. You're talking about the employment rate in Utah. What about Idaho. Throw that shit in the mix. Give me Montana. I bet employment in "Montana" has skyrocketed from all the Californians, and Washingtonians, and Oregonians, and every other kind of ian that have decided they want to live in big sky country. I have property in Montana. I get it. This article talks about pandemic lock downs, lack there of, is the reason for job growth in states like Nebraska and Utah? That is fucking hilarious. Nice try though. The democratic party does suck. Like I said, I'm not defending it. I'm just calling bullshit because ai actually spend time in these places and know what's going on? When's the last time you were in Utah? Have you ever been to Utah? I have. I know what's up. A 15 second Google search confirms what I'm already know to be true. Utah saw is seeing ridiculously high growth rates but natural growth is at it's lowest point since the 70s. What does that mean? That people born in Utah aren't just procreating and growing the population that way. Birth rates are declining. Natives are getting priced out. They're leaving. Where do you even go when you get priced out of Utah? Ecuador? People like me from places like where I'm from are moving to these places, and we need our Peet's coffee, or what ever the fuck. We need our Crumbl cookies. So there's now jobs in Utah for a hand full of natives, not that many because they are being priced out, there are jobs for these people to sell me a 5 dollar coffee. So yeah, job growth in those red states. Rock & Roll.

 Nice!    Congrats!  When all of them are firing on all cylinders they are going to be hard to beat!  Was kind of hoping Celtics play them.

But sure, you can make all sorts of excuses for the blue states -- it does not matter -- the numbers are what the numbers are. 

For example:

"There are 20 states (and the District of Columbia) with unemployment levels above today’s national 6.1 percent average. Only four (Arkansa, Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas) are red states, and they are far from the top. There are just six states with unemployment at 8 percent or higher, all are blue."

Then I heard one economist saying that the only reason those are where they are is because of Biden's energy policies hurting them.

But no matter the state, they each will have the restaurant workers and the more average pay-scale workers -- these are overwhelmingly back to work in the red states and are not in the blue states, etc.  It is not just the higher pay-scale workers they are talking about.  Their overall point is the folks were not unnecessarily put out of work and then they did not have the incentives kept in place to not go back to work.

But you cannot dismiss out of hand the evidence -- you may not like it, but it is still there.

Unemployment is only one number that matters, of course.  I am just presenting what they are saying. 

It is telling on not just the unemployment figures but also the increases in claims.  For example even wallethub notes this:

The U.S. is making significant progress in the fight against COVID-19 with the distribution of the vaccine and boosters, but the impact on the job market has lagged behind, with new unemployment claims increasing week-over-week on April 25. There are currently 6 million Americans unemployed due to the COVID-19 pandemic in total, and it’s important to look at some key stats for the latest week to get the full picture:

• There were 200,000 new unemployment claims nationwide, which is a lot fewer than the 6.1 million during the peak of the pandemic (a 97% reduction).
• While there was an increase in weekly claims nationally, every state except New Hampshire had unemployment claims last week that were better than the same week last year.
• 15 states had unemployment claims last week that were higher than before the pandemic: Virginia, Minnesota, California, Missouri, Texas, Ohio, Alaska, Colorado, New York, Utah, District of Columbia, Illinois, Michigan, Kentucky, and Indiana.

To identify which states’ workforces are experiencing the biggest increases in unemployment claims due to COVID-19, WalletHub compared the 50 states and the District of Columbia based on changes in unemployment claims for several key benchmark weeks.

So, I cannot dismiss, 'what did the GOP do' so easily.  They do seem to have a valid point about the lockdowns.  As I pointed out in the other thread, you have to consider the states that are also incentivizing their folks to NOT work as well.  That also pointed out that even the inflation is lower in other countries that did some form(s) of assistance.

But to answer your question, Montana 3.5% .  So, they are fine as well.

Utah is also fine  there In/Out rate was 52%-48% last year  compared to say 34%-66% in CA or 59%-41% in FL. 

So, Utah still adding folks. 

And, yes, I like the hiking in Moab and the hiking, camping, and skiing in Park City.  Love Bryce Canyon.  But granted I have not been in a few years and when I did it was not to look for work.

Florida is now registering almost 45% of the US market share for international tourism — the highest market share ever in history, and 20 points higher than the #2 state.

For comparison, Idaho In/Out 65%-35% and unemployment at 2.6% seasonally adjusted.  So, they are growing like crazy and putting folks to work.  Have not been hearing that much about Idaho.

Maine is the only unified Democrat-run state in the country with an unemployment rate below 5%. The average Republican-controlled state has a 4.5% unemployment rate, more than a point below the national average, while the average Democrat-controlled state (including D.C.) has a 7.2% unemployment rate, more than a point above the national average. The average state with divided government falls in the middle, at 5.3%"

So, if it is not Republican policies, whether covid-related or not, what else would it be at this point?  Maybe at some point it begins to even back out.  But what will make that happen?

There are still employment draws to the southern states.  Maybe some of it is a lack of unions coupled with other incentives -- but still that is done at the state level.  I saw Georgia is going to build a new EV auto factory, etc.

Maybe the Democrat-led states have to start following some of the Republican-led states actions to get more work or incentivize the folks to go to work.
