FORT KENT, Maine (AP) — An international sled dog race that draws thousands of spectators to northern New England will not take place in 2021 because of the coronavirus pandemic.
The Can-Am Crown International Sled Dog Races have been the top races of their kind in New England for almost three decades. Organizers said the event, which centers on Fort Kent, Maine, wouldn't be safe to hold this year.

My main goal is to finish the Iditarod with a purebred team. Being from Virginia and most of my family being in Florida, they think I'm absolutely crazy for jumping into this, but I have no intentions of going back. I'm very thankful to have my mother, my grandparents, and my fiance David's support. This year I'm running the 30 in memory of my girl Ishka, she was my first dog ever, and my smartest lead dog. I used her to train all of my up in coming leaders in training. Her daughter Acacia will be following in her mother's footsteps and running lead on my team this year

Hannah Lucas has been making the deliveries with a group of mushers for the past three weeks. She runs the Northlane Siberian Huskies and Seppala Siberian Sled Dog Team and a kennel of Siberian Huskies in Caribou, Maine.
Lucas said that while working as a clerk at Circle K she noticed lots of vulnerable residents buying small items such as milk, eggs or fruit.
"I’m out on the trails everyday with my dog teams, so I figured that I would just pick up these groceries for them and save them the trip," she told USA TODAY. "A couple of times we’ve picked up prescriptions for people at Walgreens."
