The thing that seperates the rich and poor is simple. It's ambition. You can give all the poor people whatever and it'll never be good enough. Your not poor because your unlucky. Your poor because you made choices in your life that got you to that point and your too lazy to do anything about it. Successful people have a drive to better themselves. There's a reason your flipping burgers.
You are so wrong.. and you have a greed mentality.
15 dollar living wage is not a hand out. That is only 600 for a forty hour week, approx. 400 a week take home pay.
People in sweat shops have ambition.
Yes, many people are unlucky and in a wheel chair.
All "Successful people" Make their money off the backs of the poor, fact.
Moreover, recent studies have proven that after every minimum wage increase since the 1950s, Jobs have increased. That is a fact.
So stop being so greedy, and self-centered.

I'm not saying 15 was a hand out. I meant welfare was a handout. But what are you supposed to do with the people who worked hard starting out at minimum wage that are now assistant managers at fast food places. Maybe they're making 16 an hour now, so some 17 year old is going to walk through the door on day 1 and make basically the same as the assistant manager there. Because what will happen next is the managers will want a raise. And it 'll get to the point where a salesman at best buy is making as much as someone with an engineering degree.

1) We have never had a wage increase to that proportion.
2) It may be that large companies could handle the increase but it would kill smaller businesses in two ways...the first being the payment to the employees but also they will be paying more for products because those companies would be also paying higher wages.
If you want to increase the wages, it cannot work unless we have some sort of import tariff, otherwise we will find that all products will be made elsewhere and brought in and that will absolutely kill jobs.

We kind of see this when looking at the wages in fast food industry in cities like NY.
Look at North Dakota. I think (I have heard, I don't have Real #s) but the Fast food workers in ND are making 15 because they can't attract labor for less because of the booming gas situation there.
There are places that could facilitate 15 for sure, but not when the government makes an artificial floor.

If a company like McDonalds can spend almost 3 million per day on advertising, they certainly could adjust to a higher pay scale. In fact, last year 36 companies spent more than a billion dollars on advertising. So basically you're fattening the wallets of the ad execs and those that benefit from it while still believing $15 an hour per employee is excessive.
I understand business, and that all is not as black and white as people want it to be, but even still...

So you are advocating a minimum wage based on the amount of money the business makes.
Like a mandatory minimum wage that applies at different rungs of profit?
I don't know if I hate that. Completely.
I think it would drive all talent to the larger companies/ corporations and create a "brain drain" in small business, but if we have to have a minimum wage. That would probably be a more fair way to apply it.

This comment shows that you don't have a clue how the business model works and thus I'm embarrassed for you.
The advertising is paid for out of the franchise fees each store pays monthly. McDonalds corp doesn't pay workers wages for franchisees. They are paid by local stores of which, have varying degrees of profits to measure.
So how to you propose to deal with mom and pop burger joints that can't compete with big corps like McDonald's?
It'd be pretty difficult to hire people to work for less $ if you exempt that small business and McDonald's is paying $15hr no?
You need a crash course on economics 101 or maybe high school economics for next time.

I'm plenty empathetic to the workers, but also realistic as to the problems the increase would create. Our country has made it nearly impossible for smaller businesses to compete and this would be another glaring example.

What happens 15-20 years down the road when guys like you call for another increase because housing prices have gone up yet again because you put more people in the market for apartments and houses.
When I first got married 20+ years ago we paid $425/m for a 2 bedroom duplex. Nowadays, the same place rents for at least 7 or 8 bills and I can assure you it isn't because of any upgrades.
When you keep raising wages out of empathy and not for solid business reasons you just perpetuate the problem.
I'm a bit sad that you can't figure that out.
What do the businesses get for that double in wages?
Are employees gonna work harder?
How soon will they be replaced by cheaper technology?
You will then be empathetic and rife with guilt because you caused the problem.

You probably get upset when everyone doesn't get particparion medals in sports don't you. Life's full of winners and losers the sooner you get out of your snowglobe of a world where you expect everyone to share the wealth and hold hands and dance along the sooner you 'll understand that life is what you make of it. Not to sound cliche but you create your own luck. Poor people are poor for a reason and rich people are rich for a reason. Sure there are extreme circumstances but those are rare.

Okay, we now should adopt new laws regarding gambling winnings.
If you win a high dollar wager, you must share the funds with those that lost money that day. You will learn to have empathy for those that suck at wagering.
It's only fair. Right Don Quixote?

Apparently, none of you took heed when I said that Jobs in increased every time we had a minimum wage increase since the 1950s, you ignored that.
Furthermore, Congress had empathy each time.
In 1941 the Supreme Court upheld the Fair Labor Standards Act, holding that Congress had the power under the commerce clause to regulate employment conditions. They had empathy also.
So smarten up and learn something.

Again, empathy is a great thing....but there must be sustainability with it.
It would be great to house every homeless person in a community but its fiscally impossible.

I disagree vehemently < It is possible to provide shelter for everyone. Just as it is to provide health care to all.
1) increase livable wages.
2) regulate banks,( just as we regulate speed limits for the safety of ALL ) so housing is affordable for ALL.
Below is just one example of success......................
Costco CEO Craig Jelinek, March 2013: “We pay a starting hourly wage of $11.50 in all states where we do business, and we are still able to keep our overhead costs low. An important reason for the success of Costco’s business model is the attraction and retention of great employees.
Instead of minimizing wages, we know it's a lot more profitable in the long term to minimize employee turnover and maximize employee productivity, commitment and loyalty. We support efforts to increase the federal minimum wage." .

So lemme get this straight, in your world the banks set the housing prices?
Aye yai yai!
