Is there any legislation about these 10+ million undocumented, if they work, they must pay SSI?

    Fixing social security is not hard according to Center for retirement research. There are options. If payroll taxes are raised by 3.5% points. government would be able to pay current benefits through 2098.  Polls show most Americans are willing to pay higher taxes to maintain a vital social safety net for the poor.  Before invention of social security, poverty rate was 50% among retirees.  However the rich isn't paying their fair share of payroll tax which should be paid on all income by all workers just like medicare tax.  Undocumented immigrants help to subsidize social security by paying billions in payroll tax and not receiving benefits.  In the future, labor force needs more legal and illegal immigration because US population is projected to start shrinking during the 2040s.

    @thirdperson

     I am sorry 3rd but, you are just referring to 3rd party researchbigsmile

     Center for retirement research confused

    raise it from 6.2 to max of 9.7%

    I don't care what poll you look at, if 9% of my paycheck goes to SSI while I watch half my neighbors in NYS draw off the system it won't pass even in NYS legislature.

    all of what you speak is more government in our personal lives, to make us dependent on government which is pure and old-fashioned communism

    Purpose of government should be to solve problems for the common good.   Social security is worth saving by increasing payroll tax to 9.7% so that employer pays 4.58% and employee pays 4.85%.  For most people, higher tax is preferable to reducing social security benefits.

    Socialism and communism are different ideologies.  Communism eliminates private property.  Socialism seeks greater equality by distribution of wealth.  Some of the best countries to live in are socialist.  For examples, Denmark and Sweden.  Some socialist government is necessary in modern society.  For examples, school, police, public transit and garbage collection.

    No, it should not be.  That is the main cause of a lot of the problems now.

    @cd329

     All am gonna say is if you think trump and the republicans are going to fix social security, when on a daily basis, you hear these people talking about how they are going to get rid of it.

    I think a key phrase may have been left out of this sentence.  It is understood that you believe someone is mistaken if they believe the Republicans will fix it, as they are attempting to eliminate it.  It is sort of a fragmented sentence.  But from the context, I have a question about what I am sure you mean.

    For example, this would make it clearer:

    All I'm going to say is, if you think that Republicans like Trump will repair Social Security, you should know that they constantly talk about eliminating it.

    So, if I am correct in thinking that is your meaning.

    Who is saying this exactly? Mike Lee?  Who has really said they want to get rid of it?  Some have suggested cuts and some have suggested sunsetting it, along with other programs, and reevaluating it.  Some have suggested making it discretionary spending with approval from time to time.

    Not really that many have suggested outright getting rid of it.  It is not like it is the main platform in the Republican campaigns.

    But who is to say that eliminating it is not fixing it, if there is a better plan that might be more efficient?

    Even Republicans realize what a third rail of sorts this is.  But at least they realize something needs to be done.

    We all know that very few people plan to get old.  But, surely, something better could be suggested without vilifying the suggester.  Because it certainly looks like it will need addressing sooner, rather than later.

    It would be very, very different if this were the only social program going, but it is not.

    Yes i didnt finish my sentence correctly.  "It should have been if people actually think trump and the republicans are ever going to fix social security, when on a daily basis all they talk about is getting rid of it, then you either got to stop using drugs or go to the hospital and get a brain MRI done, cause you could have a brain tumor.  Scott in florida has a whole detailed plan how to get rid of it and what blows my mind a huge majority of the people in that state need social security, yet these dumb ass senior citizens are hell bent on voting against their own self interest.  How scott got voted in as governor then into the senate still baffles me beyond belief.  The guy was the leader of a company that got charged with 14 felonies and had to pay a 1.7 billion fine due to medicare fraud and yet that piece of shit gets vote in as governor and senator.  Seriously what the fuck is wrong with our population loves criminals and wants them in charge?  This clown should have never been allowed to win either of these offices.  But then again today i read that bobert is gonna win election into the new district she just moved into.  Do the people in her district even know how fucking disgusting she is or do they just not care like the florida voters voting for scott.  Just what she did in the Theater alone should be enough for not 1 person to vote for her.  She has zero morals and does not belong in congress, but voters dont care.  I used to think all the down south hill billies were the dumbest folks on the planet, am now starting to believe the folks in colorado might be dumber.   When your kid asks you mom and dad why did you vote for a disgusting person who was stroking her boyfriends penis and letting him fondle her breasts in a public theater, sure hope you got a great answer for that.  Great job colorado

    @cd329

     Gotcha. peace_5  I thought that was your point.

    Scott has clarified his stance:

    Scott said his plan suggests that all federal legislation sunsets in five years, and if it's worth keeping, Congress can pass it again.

    "This is clearly and obviously an idea aimed at dealing with ALL the crazy new laws our Congress has been passing of late," he told Newsweek in a statement. "Joe Biden is confused...to suggest that this means I want to cut Social Security or Medicare is a lie, and is a dishonest move."

    "This is the kind of fake, gotcha BS that people hate about Washington," he continued. "I've never advocated cutting Social Security or Medicare and never would."

    As far as I know Lee is still the only one that has flat out said he wants to get rid of it.

    But, my question is still the same.  Would getting rid of it and finding a better plan be all that bad?

    Like I said, everyone knows there are problems with it.  But the Republicans seem to be the only ones that want to address it going forward.

    To just add to the above.  Republicans are not saying they want to get rid of it.  They do 'talk' about trying to 'fix' it.  Whether their fixes are feasible, or you like them or not, is another issue.

    I am not clear how this is giving the rich a tax break.  The number is already capped.

    But what are the Democrats solutions to fix it?

    It is not the 'rich' folk's problem other people do not plan to get old and save for retirement.  I think there are a lot of issues being dragged into this one that are not tied to the exact problem(s) with this program.

     Yes.  That is Mike Lee I am talking about. peace_5

    Like I said, I believe he is the only well-known one advocating for outright ending it.  Unless I do not know of others?

    Scott is a medicare fraud crook, anything he says is bullshit and lies. But the guy has conned so many people into thinking, he wants to help them when all he really wants to do is fuck them over.  1.7 billion dollar fine for the company he was in charge of. If he ever got that 5 year bullshit into play, that would be the end of social security.  Nice trick hes trying to play on people again.  All those seniors must be sniffing to much sea water. The clown is all smoke and mirrors all with a smile while hes picking your pocket

"This is clearly and obviously an idea aimed at dealing with ALL the crazy new laws our Congress has been passing of late," he told Newsweek in a statement. "Joe Biden is confused...to suggest that this means I want to cut Social Security or Medicare is a lie, and is a dishonest move." "This is the kind of fake, gotcha BS that people hate about Washington," he continued. "I've never advocated cutting Social Security or Medicare and never would." As far as I know Lee is still the only one that has flat out said he wants to get rid of it. But, my question is still the same.  Would getting rid of it and finding a better plan be all that bad? Like I said, everyone knows there are problems with it.  But the Republicans seem to be the only ones that want to address it going forward.

    Politicians created all the tax codes to make sure the richest people have all the tricks to getting out of paying. Thats why the tax code should just be a flat tax with no tricks.  A friend of mine was a big shot in the IRS, he told me take any big corporation, it takes hundreds and hundreds of IRS people to work on just 1 corporations taxes and that still isnt enough because the corporations have more tax people and lawyers to work on the companies taxes.  So they almost always win.

    For example?

    Why do they still pay so much in taxes?

    Why during the last deal were the ultra-rich the only ones paying more?

    For example:

    Democrats claim the Trump tax cut bill of 2017 was a giveaway to the “rich,” but this shows that it had the opposite impact on high-income earners. In 2018 the top 1% ended up paying $16 billion more in federal individual income taxes than they did in 2017, while 99% paid a total of $80 billion less.

    This tax scare and the SS scare are just election-season tactics used by the Democrats very often with no real substance to them.

    you know why this get voted down?  It's not the SCOTUS fault no matter what way they lean, I would like to think even if the court was packed 80/20 liberal the votes on #2 would come back the same as now

    Dem's own guns too right?  as another poster stated above ^^

    You know the one thing i will never understand even if i live to be 200, is why so many regular folks love to defend the rich every chance they get.  I wonder if they get their jollies off on being pick pocketed on the street also, lollll.  Fools just to love give their money to the rich, must sleep better at night

    I do not think they are 'defending' them as much as it is simply a tactic the Democrats use to vilify the 'rich'.

    Like they say:  words speak, numbers scream.

    The numbers are what the numbers are.

    But most voters do not care enough to do their own research.  They are easily agitated by scare tactics and supposed threats against them and their well-being.

    So, I do not think they are defending the rich, as much as simply point out the facts.

    Nobody is doing away with SS and the rich still pay the bulk of the country's taxes.

    @cd329

    Theory of giving money free to the wealthy in hopes that  --  hopes! -- all or even just most of them will then not use the taxpayer gift to enrich themselves further but rather to create millions of low wage jobs for Americans who should be grateful to them  (trickle-down economics) has been debunked as a failure
