I was in the grocery business and can tell you that the reason they went to the card was because the powers that be thought standing at the register tearing food stamps out of a booklet was embarrassing. Now we have the technology to make this happen. It would have happened 30 years ago if we would have had the technology.
Wall is onto something here. I can also say that healthy food was not at the top of the list for people using these benefits. People would be pi$$ed when they found out they couldn't use them for cigs. If people were regulated more tightly as far as what they could purchase the cost of the program would certainly go down.

Why should welfare funds be used for tattoos lingerie or concerts?
I dont see how setting restrictions on what welfare money can be spent for is a bad thing, but I also support food stamp restrictions to core food items with specific health benefit..not soda or junk food or garbage.
If people want to get tattoos or go to the movies or buy crap food, get a job and buy it with money you earned..not from welfare.
You are going to get kicked out of the club for that remark but it gets a from me.

You're probably right that more whites are on welfare than other ethnic groups. You're also correct that whites vote more Republican than Democrat but I doubt you or anyone else can provide proof that whites getting welfare vote Republican. I would think it's just the opposite.
I also agree with you when you say it's hogwash when politicians and progressives say it's racist to get rid of welfare.

You are right about business taxes and that is a joke, it is corporate welfare and yeah I dislike it even MORE than social welfare..and yeah some states (I think I read Kansas recently) kneel to corporate lobbyists and do their bidding and the social system suffers..same thing happens down here.
But the issue about setting guidelines for welfare use seems prudent and practical. If I were a politician I wouldnt have an ATM for welfare money..that is stupid. I would not support food stamp use for anything outside of the core nutritional group of food we want people to be eating..fruits, veggies, meat, you know food that is good for you..but corporate interests pollute food stamp monies so we allow people to buy soda and cheetos with it and that is a mistake.
I'd rather there be solid guidelines and restrictions since the money is given from the government, it seems reasonable the people supporting the funds should know there are guidelines and parameters for its use.
Understood. I assure You the percentage of welfare folks who are eating Lobster and shopping at Victoria's is really low. It is not a lifestyle that is desired by many. Some welfare fraud going on......yep. Enough that the state legislature that created a huge deficit with their supply side worship should be spending time worrying about it at this point in time. Nope. They have a bigger mess to fix.
Completely eliminated taxes on 53,000 subsidized farmers. Welfare being spent on seafood is not the problem in Kansas. And lingerie ? Seriously? I grew up in the rust belt. Plenty of broke behind people. I can't think of 1 welfare girl I'd want to see in a G-string.
