So you can hide behind different interpretations of data, ect but chances are that actual hate crimes are on the rise. And Presidential Rhetoric may contribute to it. The general angst and lack of empathy of this lost generation definitely contributes to it. And per the OP, the media definitely contributes to it. Let's pull back and look at a different issue under the same lense. School shooters. School shootings definitely have spiked since Columbine. I posit that the media's coverage of Columbine, and subsequent shootings, has contributed to said spike. So called "copy cats". So why does the media make these things 24/7 news stories. Is it because the country needs to be informed? They'd have you believe that. These networks are for profit companies though. And everything they do comes back to ratings and money. They are therefore profitting from exploiting tragedies, inspiring copycats, and then ecploiting the subsequent tragedy that results. The are complicit in crimes.
Back to the media. Don't you think they inspire hate crimes by the way they report them? This is only the tip of the ice berg though. The real way the media contributes to hate crimes is by fanning the flames of divisiveness and tension. And it's not just along racial lines. It's political lines. Religion. Sexual preference. Information is weaponized by the left and right. The left controls most of the traditional media and have a stranglehold on social media. The media will under report violence towards those on the right, while over reporting any violence towards the left. Take the case of ANTIFA, CNN has repeatedly justified their actions. The same network spent days vilifying the Covington kids, portraying them as agressors and racists even though they had video evidence which clearly showed them as being the passive participants.
This imbalance of reporting by traditional media players is percieved by an uninformed public as being factual. This triggers the outrage mobs on social media and ipso facto you have a race war on your hands.
Now elected officials are involved in inciting these mobs, Maxine Waters and the like. It is a recipe for disaster. If I were in the USA, on the right, I would be carrying/packin/strapped.
People need to educate themselves and stop worhsipping social media figures, don't take moral cues from celebrities. Get off Facebook and Twit.
