Wow, so your advice for him is to take matters in his own hands and not calling the police immediately? EVEN the police doesn't recommend that. They are the trained professionals. You wouldn't call the Fire Department right away if there were a fire in your house??
I didn't give him any advice at all. I pointed out that I do not understand the mindset that would make a person hide and hope everything turns out, rather than taking immediate action to deal with the threat at hand.
Absolutely call the police, as soon as possible; but understand that they may not be able to help you, and should be looked upon as a "maybe", not a definite.
Personally, I live out in the country. If someone were to break into my house tonight, then it would take the police at least 10 minutes to get here. That means I am on my own.
One more thing....if my house was on fire, you are damn right I would call the fire department.....AFTER I got my family out safely.
bunny651, I dont expect you to understand where I am coming from; but your arguements are elementary..you sound like a young kid that is either in college or live in a city. Best of luck to you.

If your doors are locked and the would be intruder is still outside, yes they would recommend you wait for them to come. If the intruder was already in the house and you had a gun they would recommend you do whatever is reasonable.
If you have a kitchen fire you fight it yourself with the fire extinguisher you SHOULD have in the kitchen. You have to do a preliminary, quick assessment of how big the fire is. But by no means do you call the FD first thing on every little fire you might have.
Why do they make and give out kitchen fire extinguishers and other normal FE's?
I hate to tell you that if an intruder is in your house pointing a gun at you, the cops are likely not going to be in good position to help you.
Again, you apparently didn't read the the first post because the scenerio was clearly stated. Are you suggesting that he should go out and confront the intruder instead of staying in the room to protect his own family with a gun in his hand? Even 14 agreed(post#27).
As for the fire scenerio, of course I wasn't talking about a tiny fire. I would move my family outside and have them call for help immediately.

At least I didn't try to put a gulit trip on someone by mentioning widow, not caring the police would walk right into an ambush...etc.
Btw, best of luck to you and your family as well.

completelMy first rant was just a shitty attempt at humor and just me saying that I feel uncomfortable around guns. I don't think that makes me any less of a man or any less capable of protecting my family. I saw someone post somewhere that "it's becuase of guns that you're free to have the opinions you have." I disagree. I could just as easily say that it's because of peace treaties and disarmament agreements that we haven't destoryed mankind y at this point.
I would argue that peace treaties are a product of people getting fed up with violence.
Why would two friendly factions need to sign or enact a peace tready? Wouldn't that peacefulness already be implied?
Peace is often a product of war. Freedom is often a product of war.
By the way....even if someone was chasing me around with a baseball bat I would prefer to have a gun to defend myself with.
There is no guarantee that our society, as we know it, will be around indefinitly. When/if poop hits the fan....and people run out of resources and come after mine with threats of violence...I prefer to have the best form of defense for my family and property. Since there is a good chance that they might have semi automatic weopons, I feel like I need to have the same.

The media and people of this great nation we live in are something else. This focus on death caused by guns is nothing more than a political agenda. If politicians were really concerned about death, they would be trying to ban alcohol. How many people are killed by a drunk driver? How many people are shot or stabbed or hit over the head with a bottle in a bar? How many women have been beaten by some drunk? But instead of addressing the problem of alcohol directly causing injury and death states in this great nation are legalizing other mind altering drugs for people to get high on and there is no outrage. But one sick SOB can shoot someone and guns must go. What a joke!!!!!!

Bigtrip I like the angle that you come at on this issue. The problem is they tried to ban alcohol and that didn't go over very well. Not very feasible. It caused more problems than it solved. I think most of us rational people and even DL36 the dullard can agree that banning guns will cause more problems than it solves at this point.
I look at it like this. I believe there is a finite amount of people the earth can support realistically. I believe the higher power manages that number through attrition. If you look over our history there have been events that culled a great deal of humans off the earth over the years through plagues, wars, tsunamis and such.
If you do believe in life after death then it doesn't make a difference how that death is achieved. If there is a higher power, they look at deaths on a spreadsheet. I believe everyone has a destiny or fixed beginning and end with the in-between looking like a flow-chart.
As I've posted before, I had two half brothers killed in a car accident when they were very young. One of them went through a windshield and nearly had his head severed by the glass. I had a younger sister that drowned in a swimming pool when she was only 4 years old.
I get that there is a difference between an accident and a murder. I pray to God that I won't ever have to see my kids suffer or die the same as my own mother has been through.
When you've lost a loved one/s so close you have to find another way to look at things to avoid depression.

whether fire or the scenario that was clearly stated... obvious having as many guns as possible and wildly firing as many rounds as possible is the logical solution in fantasy land
