on what the f*ck really happened here. specifically, what do you think was trump's true intention with this whole clusterf*ck?
here are some possibilities and then i'll give my opinion.
1. he truly wanted to win but not really to be president. he'd delegate the job to the nut he picked for vp
2. he truly wanted to win and do the job of president for some period of time.
3. you're probably heard the mountain climber asked why he climbed the mountain and he says, because it's there. maybe trump just said, f*ck it, let me see if i can do this whole presidential campaign thing.
4. he didn't want to win but wanted to stick it to someone, whether it's obama or the republicans or hillary or the system as a whole or someone else.
5. he's just trying to use this as an opportunity to scam money out of people because he has some debts to pay or that's just how he operates.
i can probably come up with others but here's my opinion.
trump is the classic case of a guy born on third who thinks he hit a triple. he's had everything in his life laid out for him. when you are born into that much money and have your dad bailing you out for every fuckup, you probably think you can do anything and money can buy you everything. he figured, f*ck it, i have enough money and people know my name, i'll run for president and make plenty of money along the way (see #5 above). i'll expand my brand name and have people all over the country cheering me on.
only, he didn't think he'd get this far. after winning the primary, which he never expected, he knew he was in way over his head. rather than just trade insults with the nuts, morons and religious quacks that genreally line up to be the republican nominee, which he's good at, once he won the primary, he was one on one with someone who actually understand the job. and there was nowhere for him to hide his incredible ignorance.
plus, once it's one on one, he didn't count on the additional scrutiny into his background because the republicans didn't bother vetting him.
and over the last couple of months, he has no idea what his exit strategy is because he didn't think he'd get to this point and didn't realize how rough it would be.
i think this issue of trump's motivation is interesting. anyone else with an opinion? an objective opinion?

Ego. All his products with his name on them, his buildings with his name on them.... everything has to be the 'biggest' or the 'best' or 'greatest'. What is bigger than the President of the USA?
And I don't think he ever had a shot to win.... just to make waves.
I've said repeatedly that he was the wrong guy at the right time. A perfect storm of a weak/unlikable Democratic candidate and a joke of a Republican lineup left the door open to an outsider....If people out there wanted someone who wasn't a classic politician/Washington insider they were probably excited, unfortunately for them it ended up being this disgrace of a human being who can't get out of his own way.
If there is someone on the outside who actually wants the job and isn't a total piece of trash they could win in 2020.

definitely ego, but i'm interested in what people think his plan was. or do you think he just said, f*ck it, i'll throw my name in the mix and see what happens with no plan?

The beauty of Trump is that the Establishment from both the Left and Right can not stand him along with the Pope. That is reason enough for me to vote for him. To answer the question. He ran because he is a closet Patriot who became fed up with the way we are governed.

Can you actually see that corrupt lying witch with her hand on the Bible come Inauguaration Day? Really? I find it amusing that Trump is the problem between these 2 people. 30 years in Politics, accomplished nothing but disasters. Good luck with her if she wins.

Mike Pence is a nut job? You are left of left to start with and with that asinine assertion if you told me that the sky was blue I would not believe you

yes, pence is a nutjob. way worse than trump. for example, he signed a law where government would force women to have funerals after miscarriages. i guess you "small government conservatives" find that a suitable use of government while us "big gov't liberals" don't. but that's not the point of this thread.
anyway, we have bws answering with trump jsut feeding his ego and having no real plan.
sundance answers that trump is pissed off at government and the establishment and truly wanted to win and do the job better.
you guys don't think trump's real motivation is interesting?

Club, I really would not know Trump's 'true' motivation. Maybe it is as simple of his hate, disdain, abhorrence and disrespect for the Clinton's. btw We are not electing a Sunday School teacher. I would say to post #6 that Putin and Jim Jung -Un have much more respect for Trump than O. This isn't suppose to be a love fest across the globe.

It really does not matter, at this point what Donald Trumps motive is/was... in spite of that what matters is his backers motive for supporting him..
Trump is flawed and there is no denying Trump has belittled people,he has said many offensive remarks,,he's an elitist and many people see him as a jerk..However many Americans rightly or wrongly.. don't care ,because they see him as the vehicle for making changing in Washing DC. and they feel like,,what do we have to lose..he gives them hope of change..his opponent does not ..
Like in 2008 people wanted a change from GWBush ..Obama offered them change... what kind of change he really didn't spell out and it sure wasn't the kind of change the people, that voted for him hoped it would be..they were let down.
Americans are sick of the way the Government is being run and of a President that does not always show, that he loves America or her past..
Say what you will about Donald Trump ,but he never talks America down ..just the opposite..people yearn for this in a president.
As with Hillary Clinton people can ask .....what is her motive for running for President ?
1.) to help children ? 2.) punish the wealthy ? 3.) further advance Ghay Issues ? 4.) flood America with refugees from the Middle East ? 5.) enlarge the Clinton Foundation brand ? 6.) feed her egomaniacal aspirations ? 7.) get dem guns ? 8.) create shovel ready jobs ? 9.) promote women power ? etc..etc..
Democrats that yearned for a fresh face (cue Bernie supporters) her face is not it..she's running as a Obama clone..and many people who will be voting for her will tell you "I don't like Hillary ".
All the same, like Trump supporters.. Hillary backers don't care what Hillary Clinton did in the past they will vote for her..no matter what her motive is for running for President.

I saw that it is some combination of #3 and #5. And add a massive ego to that and I think that was his motivation.
Ironically this may of been the best thing for the democrats in the longrun.
1) the GOP appears very divided and may take some time to bounce ack
2) it does not seem like there is much of a question as to Hillary winning
3) I truly think many of the other GOP candidates would of beaten Hillary
4) I read a story today about Paul Ryan stating that there is very genuine concern now with GOP higher ups that not only only are they going to lose the presidency but also appears that the house and senate are now very sketchy as well.

I respectfully strongly disagree. Other than his words what does Trump do or ever have done to scream patriotism? Not much if we are being honest.
And lets not forget that much of his recent political stances are almost a complete 180 from things he has been saying for several decades.

Club -- I would like to throw out another possibility.
- He knew that he could brainwash the lower echelon of our society and get them riled up. He may of strategically entered this presidential campaign as a way to stroke his ego and prove that he could be the master of all master puppet string holders.
And if that was his intention I think that we can all agree that he succeeded in spades.

It's funny how some people simply answer the questions while others seem completely obsessed with trying to spin this thread and destract from a civil and intelligent dialog about the topic.
Trump's motives matter greatly. That is why you we see trump fan-boys trying to convince us otherwise. With no experience or history of actually working for America and American citizens, we have no idea what his actual motives and intentions are at all. And aswe have seen in the debates and elsewhere Deceptive Donald's word mean absolutely nothing. He will say anything whether true or false, accurate or exaggerated because his low information uneducated will eat it up.
So learning more about who trump is as a person, his values and his choices matter greatly. Learning more about his business and financial history (tax records) matter greatly. And understanding his motives and intentions matter greatly in making a choice as to if he should be president.
Trump fan-boys look absolutely terrified of information or a discussion about their own candidate with no positives to promote.

5. he's just trying to use this as an opportunity to scam money out of
people because he has some debts to pay or that's just how he operates.
Not saying this is why but if this is his reason, he's going to regret it. The Trump business name now is so poisoned except for his hard core base.
The Trump brand name before entering the race are tied to high-end establishments. His base are overwhelmingly non-college educated and therefore do not go to these places and to blunt, they can't afford them (there are exceptions of course). Who from the Middle East now are going to pay him to have the Trump name on their hotels???
Just to see how the wealthy loathes Trump, there is not a single top Fortune 100 company CEO that have made a contribution to him since he became the nominee. The Koch brothers are even staying away from him. The college-educated crowd do not agree with him and these are the people who would have been spending money at his places.
Trump name will go the way of Qualye, Palin, Bachman, Dean. I wish Trump Inc was a trading stock, I would be shorting it.

I would offer a 6 that trump is a plant for the clintons set to destroy and splinter the gop leaving them in complete shambles, expose the ignorant low information Fox News fed majority voting base and hand Hillary and election that she really should lose.
And... seems like he's done all that
Mission accomplished

i think this is a possibility. they both talk about energy and stamina. clinton and trump are old. it cannot be easy going from one place to another, getting all suited up and having to talk to people saying the same garbage over and over. that's a brutal schedule for months and so redundant. with all of these politicians, there has to be some level of ego to want to go through that just so all of these random people cheer at what you say, even if you aren't really saying much. there is a minimum level of narcissism required. that goes for all presidential candidates but maybe trump the most.

i think this is a great point. i would guess scamming people and using donations for their personal benefit (which just about all politicians do by the way, but some more than others) is not his motivation but something he counted on a key perk. we've seen some of this with the way his campaign has paid trump related companies over the course of the last several months.
but if this was a primary motivator, he made a huge mistake. he may have pulled a few million out of this, maybe tens of millions, who knows, but the damage he has done to his longstanding businesses has to be much greater. i think this goes to the point that he never expected it to get this far, and to come under this much scrutiny and once he got in over his head, he had no idea how to get out.

i kind of hinted at this in number 4. it seems crazy but this whole thing has been crazy. maybe he isn't quite a plant but part of this could be a big f*ck you to someone or the system as a whole.

sundance, slim, i know we can't know what his motivations are for sure, short of trump coming out and saying something, but this election has been off the charts. i think it's interesting to speculate. there really isn't a wrong answer, that we know of, because we may never know the answer. it could be as simple as, he wanted to be president and give it a shot. i just doubt it given some of the self inflicted wounds during the campaign and some of the things trump has said which have not been consistent with someone trying hard to win.

Yes so much of what he does seems to appear that his intentions and motives should be questioned
