A UN agency has made an urgent call for assistance to address the severe food crisis in Yemen.
On Friday, the UN Food and Agriculture Organization, or FAO, released the results of a nationwide survey on food security and nutrition in Yemen. This is the first survey of the situation since the civil war escalated in the country in March, 2015. Other UN agencies were also involved in conducting the survey.
The results show agricultural production in Yemen is falling drastically amid the prolonged conflict. In addition, many households are unable to obtain adequate amounts of food due to rising prices.
The results also show that the number of food insecure people in the country has risen by 3 million in the past 7 months, to an estimated 17.1 million people. That's 60 percent of the total population
