Yellen warns that the government will not pay it's bills

Historically, raising debt ceiling is normally bipartisan.  While there were past votes opposing raise, they were symbolic while knowing there were enough votes for passage.  For example, protesting against president Bush's Iraq war was the goal and not damaging US economy.  However current risk of default is due to MAGA republicans radicalized to exploit debt ceiling as a political weapon to hold economy hostage.  Potential crisis need not happen because democrats support raising debt ceiling.

Treasury secretary calls republican demand to link spending cuts to debt very irresponsible.  Raising debt ceiling is about paying bills already approved by congress.  It's not about new spending.  There shouldn't be negotiation over whether or not to pay bills.  Instead of introducing legislation to cut spending, republicans prefer extortion.  As a political stunt, refusing to raise debt ceiling has always failed.  Republicans create a crisis that need not exist.

Depends on whether a party is dedicated toward helping America or scoring political points to gain power.
