Masks, vaccines and other public health measures are like layers of swiss cheese. Each layer has holes. But when combined, they can block most coronaviruses or prevent serious illness. Vaccines are the last layer of defense. But a common mistake is to prematurely remove defenses. Masks, social distancing, testing and contact tracing are ways to safely reopen economy without lockdowns. When vaccines became available, US went all in on vaccination as main remedy. However since population vaccination rate isn't high enough to reach herd immunity, masks and other measures are still necessary.
