In Arizona State's 6 games against UCLA's Defense, Wazu's D and Stanford's D, ASU scored 52, 55, 51, 60 (in regulation), 49 and 47. They were 1-5 in those games with their only win being an OT win at home over Stanford and in those 6 games, they averaged 52.8 ppg and were outscored by an average of 13.5 points per game. They don't do well against tough defenses. Now they lay 6 points against a very tough D and a team that ranks 337th out of 341 in experience. With a total around 114, 6 points is very generous in such a low scoring game. |

I feel unAmerican making my Biggest Play on Thursday on an NIT game
in College Basketball I am dizzy having lost my Valpo/Wahingtom total over 144 on Wednesday by one point when no points were scored in the final 2:38. I know the gambling gods will be kinder on Thursday.
PLAY OF THE DAY
4.5u NIT -- SOUTHERN ILLINOIS +6 - Arizona State isn't in the Big Dance because of their Cupcake Schedule. Their out of conference schedule ranked 296th in the country while Southern Illinois' schedule ranked 7th. The Salukis play some of the toughest on ball and physical defense in the country and the Sundevils with the 5th most inexperienced team in the entire country has not faced anything like this.
3.5u USC -3 - The Trojans are athletic as hell and have more weapons and played better down the stretch. Beasley is a man child and Walker comes and goes but all around USC can play the better defense and is more well rounded and playing the better ball. USC was 12-5 down the stretch while KSU was 5-7.
2u Baylor +3 - I think the Big 10 is overrated. Purdue faced two Big 12 teams this season and lost by 10 at Missouri and lost by 3 on a neutral court to a weak Iowa State team. Baylor is more experienced. |

I will be honest. I turned the game off with 3:10 left needing just 3 points figuring it was in the bag to watch the Utah State game and flipped back and saw there was 4.7 seconds left and Brockman at the line and was shocked when it lost. Then I looked back and figured out what happened! Washington scored ONE point over the last 3:25 when the score was 70-70!

Washington shot 11 for 24 (47%) from the foul line!

That was ugly. I went over 144. WIth 3:10 left, Washngton led 71-70. I needed just 3 points in 3 minutes for a push. At 2:38 left, Valpo led 72-71. I needed one point in the final 2:38 for a push. 2 minutes and no scoring and Valpo gets fouled for 2 shots and an 85% shooter going to the line. He missed two. Then Washington has a chance to win and Jonathan Brockman gets fouled and goes to the line for two with 4.7 seconds left. He missed two and after a fight for the loose ball, the Valpo player gets the ball and with one second left is grabbed by the Washington player and the referee ignores it and lets time run out. Final score 72-71. Not one point in the final 2:38 and 0 for 4 from the line in the final 30 seconds. Bad way to lead into the Big Dance tomorrow.

1u UNCC +9 - The 49ers have shown they can play well out of conference. They beat Clemson by 10 at Clemson, beat Davidson, Wake Forest and Southern Illinois. The A-10 made a nice showing yesterday and the 49ers have no real reason to be disappointed in the NIT. It should be a low scoring game so +9 is a generous price for a fairly young team that should have some enthusiasm.

Darn. I was leaning the other way. I liked that out of conference UNCC beat Wake Forest, DAVIDSON, Southern Illinois, and CLEMSON by 10 at Clemson. Also that UNCC won 5 of its last 6 and that 9+ points is a lot in a low scoring game like this. Seems like you have a lot of respect here so I will second guess my play since I was on the bubble and maybe not make a play.

SD State was 6-8 their last 14 and 2 of those wins were over 0-16 Colorado State. They struggled after losing Kyle Spain for the year. They have to travel 2500 miles for this game. I agree Florida is a team to bet against, but this might not be the spot. I think I will wait for this weekend's game when Florida hosts Creighton and lays 4-5 points.

The most interesting game of the night to me:
2u Utah State +8.5 - a complete contrast in styles. In Utah State's last 24 games, their lowest offensive efficiency has been 101.9. In their last 24 games, their fewest points scored is 66. I just looked at Utah State's numbers for the season and was shocked. They are 6th nationally in offensive efficiency, 1st in effective field goal percentage, 8th in 3 point shooting, 2nd in 2 point shooting and the 2nd best free throw shooting team in the country. At home, Illinois State has held its opponents to an offensive efficiency of less than 98.4 12 out of 16 times and have held its opponents to 66 points or less 12 out of 16 times. However the MVC was down this year. Illinois State did not have much of an out of conference schedule and lost their 2 toughest games on neutral sites to Indiana and Kent and lost at Eastern Michigan. They also lost three times to the only tournament team in the MVC, Drake, including a horrific performance in the finals. This seems like a lot of points against a team that can shoot the three and hits its foul shots. |

Hey Ditty-
Great job. What is the cutoff time? Do you have to have all selections made for both days before the first game tips tomorrow afternoon or do you just have to have all selections in before each individual game tips? If you answered that already, I apologize. Thanks for all your efforts. |

Record: 80-77
2u Miami Ohio
+4 - I am a lot more impressed by Miami O this year than Tulsa
and Conference USA. Miami O beat Xavier, Mississippi State and South Alabama
(all tournament teams) this season. They also battled USC to a 4 point loss in
Anaheim, lost by 2 at Lousiville and beat Illinois on the road. MIAMI
OHIO is 11-1 ATS in all tournament games over the last 2 seasons.
2u UNDER Utah/UTEP
FIRST HALF 66.5 - UTAH is 23-5 UNDER the 1st half in all
games this season. UTAH is 12-1 UNDER in the 1rst half in road games this
season.
2u OVER UCSB/Ole
Miss FIRST HALF 69 - OLE MISS is 12-0 OVER the 1st half
total after scoring 80 points or more this season. OLE MISS is 9-0 OVER
(+9 Units) the 1rst half total after scoring 85 points or more this
season.
