The Russians exposed some slackness in the Irish defence after the break, with Vasily Artemyev and bright young hope Denis Simplikevich crossing the line. Ultimately, however, the five-point success leaves Ireland very well-placed to win the section, which they will do with any sort of win in their final game against RBS 6 Nations rivals Italy.
Leo Cullen was captaining Ireland on his World Cup debut as his side looked to ensure that the hard work in defeating Australia last week did not go to waste. They did just that.
O’Gara could not miss the game’s first penalty chance from right in front of the posts as he made it 3-0 and, with Russia reduced to 14 men for a spell, he was soon knocking over a couple of conversions. O’Brien quickly then doubled the try count, the impressive Leinster openside going clear after a move involving O’Gara, Earls and Cronin.
There was then a lull in the scoring as Russia tried to gain some ground, though Vladimir Ostroushko’s attempt at trying to run clear was stopped in no uncertain terms by the unyielding Donncha O’Callaghan. O’Gara and Kearney were among the men to be held up just before the line in further Ireland attacks, and it would be the 37th minute before they got try number three.- https://www.setanta.com
