While Bennett, 61, joins the club on a four year deal in November, Cronulla bound utility forward Mark Taufua lashed out at the seven-time premiership winning coach who did not see him as a part of the club's plans for next season via his Twitter account ‘@Angnmarecko’.
Taufua questioned why Bennett was in Newcastle preparing for next season instead of focusing on the Dragons upcoming final in Brisbane.
“A few of da anti Wayne Bennett Boys r drinking at @JzEbByT (Zeb Taia’s) house while they have a #Rank meeting with Bennett.Worry about da Dragons u 9Ball,” Taufua tweeted.
“Wanye Bennett Deez!! #LetTheGoodTimesRoll.
“Just hanging with De Gois (Sharks-bound hooker Issac de Gois) n Kaufusi (Antonio Kaufusi) just laughing about Wayne Bennett! Dis guy is coach of da Dragons but is havin a meeting wit all my boys.
“Sounds like I'm hating but he's a 9ball and I wish he was a player so I could fold him like my washing bahahahahaba #EatDeez."
Taufua debuted for the Knights in 2007 where he has played out his entire first grade career.
He is still employed by Newcastle until November, when he will make the switch to Cronulla for the start of pre-season.
Taufua joins the Sharks on a two-year deal along with de Gois who was also not wanted by the super coach.
While Newcastle are still attempting to lure home Danny Buderus, they offloaded de Gois who was assured he was wanted at the club until Bennett was recruited by mining magnate and new owner Nathan Tinkler.
“Miss all my teammates, past n present! It's been a pleasure! I wouldn’t be the player I am today without you guys! #WayneBennettDeezYaDog,” Taufua tweeted.
“@MrMaka_ Sharks! The shire will be on fire next year coz I'm coming with the most underrated hooker Isaac de Gois, so make some noise.”
Since the tweets on Wednesday night, which have since been deleted from the page, the Samoan has been met with an abundance of messages from angry Knights fans.
One fan replied; “should take a page out of @blueysouthern (Steve Southern’s) book and show some class and respect to the club that gave him a shot,” making reference to the former Cowboy who will join the ESL next season.
Bennett’s Dragons play their elimination final against his former club the Brisbane Broncos on Saturday night in what is their last chance to win back-to-back titles.
Sportsnewsfirst.com.au attempted to contact the Newcastle Knights and Cronulla Sharks however neither club was available for comment.
