I guess it's the Worlds #1 sport by a long shot, simply for the purity of the game. Nobody is playing it only on their home soil, and claiming it go be " The World Series ". It brings together the best 32 teams, based on a regional qualification, and puts country against country, to see who is the REAL champion of this planet.
Do they miss a bite from a player not involved in the action ? Definitely. Just as a ref misses a holding call that creates an interception instead of a TD the other way. Or a foul under the basket, prior to a defender grabbing a rebound that could have been easily tipped in for a winning bucket.
Ultimately, Italy didn't take matters into their own hands, and win against Costa Rica, or look to win against Uruguay. Blame the ref for a missed bite that was only detected on video after the fact ? Nah, it's the same thing.
Ivory Coast losing because of a bad penalty call ? No chance. It was a foul that stopped a player from having a clear shot, unimpeded. Nobody seems to have mentioned all the numerous chances they had to put the game away in the last 10 minutes. Time and time again, they blundered 3 and 4 on 1's, to seal their own fate.
Yup, it's still the greatest game on this planet, officiated by humans, not 2 hours of video delays. All I can say is.....AMEN to that.
Well said Franz regarding the refereeing of today's games, but I disagree on one of your major points.
I would like to see the implementation of a Coaches video review not unlike what there is in the NFL. Each coach would be allowed a maximum of 2 reviews of critical incidents per match in major tournaments such as the World Cup. You imagine if the debut Brazil-Croatia game was the World Cup final and consider the grossly unfair decisions which occurred in that game. It could damage the game/event irrevocably.
Someone might say, ‘
Why should sports be fair when the rest of life isn’t?‘
The WHOLE point of sports is that it takes people away from the chaos
or the unfairness of life and rewards people for their athletic prowess,
good hitting, hard work in a well regulated environment. Background,
race, class isn’t a factor, only sporting prowess! To want to leave the
BIG calls in the hands of imperfect referees, because it reflects the
unfairness of life and not be aiming for perfecting the rules and
regulation of the sport and rewarding sporting prowess is a very flawed
argument indeed.
I don’t understand how people would prefer unfairness or imperfection to occur in their
sport as opposed to fairness. Fairness is what makes sport better than
watching life dish out its customary unfairness.
Nearly all the major world sports even the very conservative and traditional MLB have video review in place. The only ones lagging on the issue of fairness in their sport is World football. Goal line technology is just a token implementation to make it seem like Fifa are doing something when in reality it will be hardly used.
