 There seems to be no rhyme or reason for dates in the names.  Sometimes it is the founding and sometimes they pick a 'celebration' day, etc.

The year they were founded. Hannover 1896 and Schalke 1904. The 1 in 1.FC Koln refers to them being the first team in that town.
