This is a great thread, the whole gambling/ dealing with wife / family comes up a lot. When I met my wife I told her on I think it was our 2nd date, I bet, I 'm English , it's what we do, I'll never ask u for money and sometimes I may buy u nice things if u have a nice result, 11 years of marriage later, some diamond earrings and a partial kitchen refurb and I get to cap and watch sport pretty much how I want.

This is a great thread. Seems this forum is worldwide. Anyways..
I'm a 23 year old New Jersey-an and Im an analyst at a struggling casino in Atlantic City. I grew up down here so i've been around gambling all my life, hada fake ID when I was 16 and used to play cards at the Taj Mahal. I played college basketball up north, but my love was soccer in high school when i was all-south jersey, but chose to go on with basketball. My first sports bet was on the Ravens in the super bowl when they played the Niners, its been all down hill from there haha. Ive lost a lot of money betting on sports but honestly its all about enjoying it and i could careless about the money department right now.

Born in Poland to Polish/Austrian family. My old man escaped communist Poland to England. He loved the Beatles they were from Liverpool so he sent me back a Reds kit so my team for life was chosen. Gave my mom the option of Australia, South Africa or Canada to start new life my mom picked Canada because it was too hot in the other two. Served in the Army as a weapons technician had a grenade explode and at my feet and blow me 6 feet away, nearly froze to death in an arctic exercise. Played football in high school. Graduated Univeristy in the 90's was going to go to law school but decided there was more money to be made in Finance so I became a Commodities Futures Broker for a dozen years and saw my share of ups and downs never meant for the normal man. Travelled all over the world, read hundreds of books, drank thousands of bottles of wine, smoked God knows how much. Got married to a big eyed, big hair, big boob, big heart and a big tempered half Italian, half Colombian soul mate. Did my fair share of Drugs, and woman, got in trouble with the law, and finally cleaned up my act when the love of my life my daughter was born 6 years ago, had a son 2 1/2 years ago. Started to gamble on soccer in 2004, started to make money doing so 3 years ago, only when I realized money management was the key, and it was easier to make money in sports than the financial market.

well, my own story is pretty dull in comparison to some of the other posters...i'm rather new to soccer, having grown up in north america (Canada) and not really following it much during the formative years. But as we all know, things can be a little more interesting when you can lay a few bucks on what we call professional sports. This being the first season of soccer I'm watching, you don't realize how global the game is until you see all the matches that take place at any given time.....bundesliga, serie a, copa libertadores, j-league, a-league..wow! Despite the ugliness of match fixing and corruption, it truly is the world's sport, and something people from around the globe can partake in.
have always enjoyed having a punt, after all, life is one big gamble...there's not one thing you do that doesn't involve some kind of risk in this world, it's just that this particular form has somewhat negative connotations depending on who you talk to..
just your typical office worker these days...nothing exciting, but i would like to share this: About 2 years ago, my dad had a bad stroke, and when i mean bad, i mean vegetable bad. Only in his late 60s, was about to retire, then this garbage sandwich appeared and now he's got to eat it piece by piece. Can't move, can't talk can't do anything. It's a joke. If he were an fool, I could live with it but he was a decent man and doesn't deserve this fate. There are no good days anymore, it's simply a matter of managing the crappiness of each day. The least I can do is just visit him when I can...whole thing just pisses me off though, as it felt like the health care system was useless during this whole ordeal
Things like this can throw you in a stupor, and if anything, sports are one of the few things that can offer a distraction, an outlet if you will. Apart from that, life is a blessing..every day you have good health should not be wasted, so don't fixate too much on the petty crap that appears every now and then. take time to enjoy the small things in life..there will be a day when you can't enjoy that coffee, or buy flowers for your wife, etc..
Oh, and if you're in a relationship, don't check sports scores too much on the phone. Trust me, women don't appreciate it. I learned the hard way.. i'd be curious how some of you married folk balance the sports, family, etc.. but that's for another thread.
beertapper..the part about your dad and his condition chilled me, I am truely sorry. I knew that i made the right decision re my dear mother last September...thnx for sharing tho.

Hey guys, new here, but man oh man I didn't realize there are so many Belgians on this soccer forum. Weird. Anyways I'm a 24 year old Belgian who's still studying and playing poker to get around. I've been born in Zambia, but when I was 1.5 years old we went back to Belgium and I've been living in Antwerp ever since.
Been gambling on sports since I was 15, at first only on tennis and football (soccer for you Americans on here), now I'm mostly an NBA bettor. OP, you're not by any chance a poker player aswell? I have a couple of friends who are poker pros living in Malta, and one of them has a Swedish roommate.

Glad to see the thread has been used in the way I wished it to be, very nice to get a deeper insight in peoples lives and get to know each other better
@Donnycrane Malta is a place where a huge amount of betting companies are located or have their main offices. I work in one of those myself. I'd say Malta is somewhat of Europe's mini answer to Vegas, and I mean "mini". There are about 9000 Swedish people here, which makes it 2% of the Islands population, me being one of them myself so I can imagine, many swedes are here to play poker, gamble or work within the business somehow. Nice story mate, and I am also surprised by the amount of Belgian users here

Haven't posted in years, but I've been on Covers for 10+ years now following certain cappers, and just wanted to say this Soccer forum (and sometimes Hockey) contain some of the best cappers/posts/content of all this site! Sure there's the random d-bag every now and then, but that just comes with the territory of gambling. Glad to know the personal stories of some of y'all and wish you nothing but luck in both life and betting adventures!
Cheers!

Sween, mom was living n a "assisted living" facility and one day she got n a hurry to get to the beauty salon and forgot her walker...about 10 ft down the hall she falls and hits her head ... but the carpet is thick, but when ur 91 it didn't go well .... loong story short after a helicopter ride frm Pittsburg KS to a bigger hospital n Joplin MO she was diagnosed with a brain bleed and I had to make the decision (as per her request) to have her put into a room and made as comfortable as possible and let her pass ... it did not make me very popular w/her large extended family, and friends, especially since I live over 800 miles away...but when I flew in and spoke w/almost everyone and I explained my mothers wishes ... all understood and we then CELEBRATED her life. Peace be with you!

My real name is Vincent, 26. I've lived 25 years in Paris suburbs, have moved since july 2013 in Geneva,Switzerland to live with my girlfriend who has a good work in one of those international organisations. I've studied pharmacy and I work partial time, while I try to write the thesis that will give me my final diploma. Not easy to write a thesis on your computer when you are used to gamble online, I lose quite some time.
I capped soccer only 4 years, and only 2 years seriously. I'm using preterit because I'm done with this. The only link I have kept is the CPL competition here, but I barely spend 5 or 10 minutes to decide a play.
I quit sports betting because in the last months/years, I had quit other activities/stuffs that bring me more happiness and accomplishment.
I don't have physical friends that are gambling, and it's not the kind of activity you want to share to the girl you are living with, so you end up talking with people on internet and step by step it becomes satisfying, until you open your eyes and see your life is getting emptier every day.
If I had a bad day, I was nervous in my life, and could even be a bit rude with my girlfriend if something was going wrong. I was less attentive to her, and we were having sex fewer and fewer because if I was stressed by a coming play, or pissed by a past result, I had no desire.
I know I'm going in a lot of details but I just want people that will recognize themselves in what I'm talking about, to just quit this poor activity.
I respect the people that gamble as a living but still manage a well-balanced life.
Fact is, I was doing it as the main leisure time so it was either working time or gambling and at the end of day/week, when you talk to people, you notice you have nothing interesting to share.
I've quit for 3 weeks now and I don't feel any need for it so I'm quite satisfied. I'm back at doing sport during free-time and as an ex-high level sportsman ( 1st cat cyclist at the age of 18-19) it brings me a lot of self-esteem back. I can even share it with my girlfriend as she is starting to like running and hiking. We live in a beautiful place, with green mountains, lakes, pure air and it's a joy to spend time in this nature wether walking, bicycling or even swimming.
Again, I have nothing but respect to the life of a gambling man if he's happy at it and enjoy his leisure time.
Cheers to everyone that will read this and understand what I was feeling.

Vincent--- Gambling should be fun and the only way it stays that way is if you treat it as entertainment. You can deposit 100 dollars and play a dollar as a unit and it will never affect your lifestyle. Only bet what you consider entertainment money. BOL and stay happy & healthy

30 year old man here. Been betting for about 5 years now. 1st bet was a $30 bet on a Chelsea ML game. I hit it, and thought betting was pretty easy.
I proceeded to take a $500 roll and turn it into $9,000 during college football season doing parlays. Then lost it.
Next season, I got to $13,000 doing college football season, using parlays.... then lost (most of it).
Now I've learned to become more disciplined with my amounts. My roll is at 4.5K and I try to just bet $50 - $150 amounts.
I live in the US, work as a lawyer, and have a wife and two children. I also have some health issues (immune system problems), so it puts life in perspective more so when I'm ticked that I've lost a wager/won a wager.
In the end, it all really doesn't matter.
From dust we came and to dust we shall return.

I repeat, it was my own fault, not being able to keep it as a hobby. I am sure you can gamble on your leisure time without having to end other activities. But I wasn't able to do that balance.
5 weeks ago, I was in Paris to visit family, and my best friend invited me to go out, grab some beers and share our stories, but I felt I had nothing interesting to share and I even turned down his invitation because I wanted to live bet a PSG game.... on which I ended up winning 2 units but felt guilty/bad after that.
When you wake up thinking about what you will wager on today and go to sleep thinking about what you have olayed, then it's close to mental illness.
This hobby was not bringing me self-esteem and I was destroying what was good in my life so it was better to put an end to it. But it was not easy to quit, because when you are feeling bad, you become a weak person.
I still have progress to do. I still procrastinate too much at my taste but I had fall really low so it takes time I guess.
Cheers.

I am sure you two guys handle it well. From what I remember, gambling arrived in my life when I was having doubts in my professionnal/student life, when I had to make choice and work a lot, it was easier to accept myself as an addicted gambler to justify myself on no doing things properly, rather than doing the efforts.
I am sure when my life is better settled and I am an accomplished man, I may be able to bet for the fun of it with parsimony.
But so far I remember it as a time-wasting, lonely activity.
