agreed. anyone with knowlegde of this game and the talent on each countrys roster was on mexico here.
So it has been established that everyone who knows what they are doing was on Mexico, the rest of us squares were on France.
Lets move on.

Just got back from watching the game and have a few thoughts....
ONYEWU SUCKS DONKEY BALLS
When is somebody with some influence going to realize this? He has been a thorn in my side for 6 years now, I cant take any more of this. BOTH GOALS WERE HIS FAULT. The first he gave the guy 10 yards of space, and the second was unforgiveable - playing the guy onside was terrible. I said it in my group A writeup in post 1 of this thread - he gave a year extra to Milan for FREE - and that is a bargain for Onyewu.
The goal being disallowed was absolute horseshit - an obvious bad call - but those things happen. I just dont see how we can continue to win giving up chances like we do - its not so much the number of chances - but we are like African teams - when we give up chances we give up GREAT chances for the opposition.
Algeria wont be a cakewalk. We will need to win, and I think we will - but it wont be easy - there is not much between Algeria and Slovenia - and everyone saw what happened today.

Heartbreaking 2nd half for any of us with "USA not to advance".
I imagine either outcome would have been bitter sweet for you Van. I hope you're right that Algeria will give them a run for their money. I'm not greedy, I would be more than happy with a draw in that game.
BTW, you're doing awfully well for someone that doesn't watch much soccer and whose only preparation was reading through a couple of magazines...

that ref was terrible all game. tough break for the US, but I don't think Slovenia will get a point off England. US still has a good chance of advancing.
Refs were horrible in the first game as well, did you see the red Klose received, wow what a bad call.
I'm not one to complain about refs. But in soccer one call can change everything. its a shame really
Agreed - and overall the refs have been very good - but I agree about the cards in the early game and the goal in this one.
But this shit happens. In the NBA, you can argue every call and that the refs decide almost every championship.
You have to live with it. Im not overcooking it - Im just saying that it was a bad call - but without some horrible defending we would have never been in that situation.

Not too bittersweet for me - money can be made any day - USA winning at the WC takes precedence for me. But yes, I would say my USA not to advance is not a good value now.
Although the USA to win against Algeria should be about -140 (guess) so having them to lose at +118 isnt so bad. I could still sell it now (by betting Algeria +.5) and only pay a small tax to do so.... Will think about it.

21. Germany / Serbia - Serbia +.5 +140 (1 unit) - This line has crept down, mostly because it started way too high based on Germany's first performance (which was undeniably great), and Serbia's first performance (which was undeniably awful). Germany is everyones "best team" at the WC so far - a label that often does not translate in to long term success (ask the Dutch, or the Italians). So Im going with my pretournament feeling on this one - and betting in to a value line that is way too high. If Germany come out and control the possession like they did against Australia and pass at 85%+, they will win, but I look for a desperate Serbia team to come out with something to prove and look to be more offensive and not just sit back like they did much of the Ghana game. Next week, everyone will have a new "best team". Predicted final score Germany 1 Serbia 1.
WIN
22. USA / Slovenia - Slovenia +.5 (1 unit) - I will go against my heart here, and gladly lose this one to see the USA go on to win. I just dont see how the USA wins this game outright 56 out of 100 times. Both teams will think they have to win - the USA really could get a draw out of this and feel OK about their chances to advance, but Slovenia needs a win here - a draw doesnt suit them so well with England on deck. I just dont buy in to the USA being able to create enough open play to create chances on net - and I still feel that they are very vulnerable at the back - even with Howards tremendous play. I hope the USA win, but my head tells me that taking the odds here is the right play. Final predicted score - USA 1 Slovenia 1
WIN
23. England / Algeria - Over 2.5 +108 (1 unit) - At the risk of repeating myself, England dont have a defense, and on top of that Ledley King is now out of the tournament, leaving a back line that is plugging holes and bailing water. England can and will score, and Algeria will feel a sense of urgency with their first round loss - and cant afford to sit back and defend. There should be lots of open play in this one. After this one, everyone will think England is back. Predicted Final score - England 3 Algeria 1.

This is a strange group. I haven't been able to watch the start of the England game, but I'm following on GameCast. It's starting to look like all 4 teams are pretty evenly matched.

what's up Vanzack? nice call on Nigeria not advancing. that was the first bet i placed after reading this thread.
argentina and the netherlands are looking good, but of course it's still early and anything can happen. good luck.

Van, my largest bet of the Cup was on England to win the group. Not a great bet in hindsight but technically there is still hope.
So basically England has to beat Slovenia to get to 5 points. But what if both England and the U.S. win by the same margin, and therefore both have 5 points and the same goal differential. What happens to my England to win Group C bet?

The USA would top the group on goals scored as they have already scored 3, whilst England have scored only 1

It starts with goal differential, and moves to goals scored.
So the group looks like (points, GD, goals scored):
SLV 4 +1 3
USA 2 0 3
ENG 2 0 1
ALG 1 -1 0
For England to win the group, they have to win.
***If they only win by 1 goal, they would win the group if the USA drew or lost.
***If the USA wins by the same GD against ALG than ENG does against SLV - USA wins the group.
***If the USA wins by less GD against ALG than ENG does against SLV - ENG wins the group.
So England wins the group if:
1. They win and USA draws or loses
2. They win, and USA wins by less GD than ENG for final game.

SO TO MAKE IT VERY EASY:
Englands goal differential in the final game minus USA goal differential in the final game has to be at least +1 for England to win the group.

You're right about Onyewu, we simply have no hope when he's on the field, he will single-handedly give the opposition 1-2 goals every game. He almost makes me look back fondly on the Jeff Agoos era, and that guy used to give me migraines.
I don't know who else that we can put in for Gooch, but there has to be somebody----maybe Jonathan Spector, although he sucks too. It's such a shame, because if we had solid central defenders this team would have a chance of advancing far into the tournament.
