The year starting great for me but after a couple of bad months I put myself in a bit of a hole and ended up laying off the end of the season for the most part. So going into this tournament I am at 108-207-1 (-6.91) for the season. I will keep my record separate for the tournament and then throw it into the total at the end. Humorously after 38 weeks of hard work I ended up at -0.02 units for the season in the premier league. Ultimately I am confident heading into next season, and that was an improvement off my first year of strictly tracking EPL so it's all good. Just wanted to share this for the sake of accountability, something that's getting rarer and rarer around here.
Anyway, on to the tournament. Very excited for international season as last summer was a very successful time for me. No futures this year (yet) so I will keep this thread for my plays and discussion through out the tournament. GL all and of course...

~Seems to be a lot of love out there for Colombia, both tonight and for the whole tournament, and obviously I hope you are all right, but I have some concerns about the squad. First regarding tonight...I think that the USA is just going to be more focused, more excited, and the home field advantage will be big tonight. I think the quality gap is pretty substantial, however, and because of this I think the USA will be okay to take a point. Colombia should be content with a point as well I think. I think both teams will look at the group and see that a point here is totally okay, whereas dropping all 3 creates a difficult hole to get out of. I think this could lead to some cautiousness towards the end of the match, so I think it adds some value to a draw. James has not been seeing much field time and it will be his first match back with the squad, and I think it will take some time for the squad to regroup.
As for the tournament, I was very excited about the team last summers copa america and I learned the hard way that it isn't just about talent and experience in these international tournaments, but also about fatigue, motivation, and form. 2 years ago the team was excellent at the world cup and the following season LOTS of the players signed big contracts in Europe and played LOTS of minutes with their respective clubs. Last summer the motivation the team brought to the tournament was totally lacking in comparison to the world cup, many of the players seemed fatigued from just so many minutes during the season, and certain players (for example Cuadrado at Chelsea) had some of their confidence taken away by being a middle of the pack player at a big club rather than a star somewhere a bit smaller. I worry we could see this from James this tournament, although on the flip side he may be well rested and extra motivated, so I will wait and see.
As of now I am optimistic, but not naive about the fact that these tournaments are very difficult on the players after a long season, and it is hard to know out of the gate what we will get.
So, tonight I will settle on a draw, and feel out the team before making any strong claims about their potential, and I would categorize my outlook as "cautiously excited"

Great opener for Colombia thought they looked very solid and motivated, so happy to see that...I do have to say the USA looked very bad, worse than usual, what is with this team?

Just a hunch, they aren't very good but manage to score goals and I was impressed with their general approach to last years Copa America. Costa Rica have talent, but last summer seemed a shell of the world cup team. Paraguay is accustomed to a much more difficult level of competition, and should go for the win.

~I've seen more Bolivia matches in the past year than I needed to that's for sure, and I'm no stranger to the lack of quality in the side, but I've also seen quite a bit of Panama, and I just can't make sense of how one-sided this line is. I was high on Panama going into last years Gold Cup, and not only were they poor, but they have never seemed to recuperate. The 4-0 result of the USA over Bolivia I find very misleading as the USA seemed to make a big deal around preparation for this tournament while Bolivia certainly did not appear to, and swapped more than half of the lineup through out the match. I am not betting on anything amazing from Bolivia here, but if Panama had to play Argentina, Chile, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Uruguay etc. all of the time, they would have not much to show for in terms of results either. The line is just much too steep on a neutral pitch against a team that plays way tougher competition all the time. The weather sounds like its crazy and this only supports unusual outcomes more in my opinion. Let's see....

Looks like another one up in flames, but I have to say the level of play in this match is shocking...can't remember seeing a game like this, and it goes beyond the weather, the decision making is really incredlble

Missed most of the fun unfortunately, but my boys have made it this far and I finally think its time to back them! Will they win tonight? Not sure. But I do know that not much separates these teams, but recent results have skewed the line heavily. Colombia lost to Costa Rica, and then crept by Peru, while Chile clobbered Mexico in a game that while impressive, was certainly an outler in terms of possible results. Price is right for Colombia, and remember a draw is straight to penalites, so at that point we're on a +money coin flip. GL all
